Table Legs

Okay, I have been trying to find a desk for the last few weeks, but I have not been able to find anything that fits my specific needs, which are:
Over 30" in height, I am tall, very tall.
No 'cubby hole' for your legs, no drawers, nada.

This all leads me to believe that I am actually looking for a very large table.

Here are the questions::
I have thought about buying a cheap interior slab door and attaching legs to it. Where the heck can I find table legs? I cannot seem to find any on the HomeDepot/Lowes/McCoys sites, and Container Store sells them for 16 dollars apiece which is ridiculous.

If I do attach them, should I attach them to a solid core door or is a hollow door stout enough?

Alternatively, where can I find interior saw horses? They are all over the place it seems in other cities, but I cannot seem to find any here. Just something to rest the door on and made of wood or something that looks like it.

Any ideas?

I was looking for table legs a while back. You can find a few places on the internet. Try doing a google for table legs. I remember checking Lowes/Home Depot at the time and they did not really have anything to offer. Also, you may want to check with a funriture refinishing person in your area.

Instead of a door, you might try a piece of maple plywood or something similar. Just attach the legs, get some stain, and you are good to go. And yes, the legs will be fairly expensive. You might look to e-bay or something for something cheaper.

Sounds like you're trying to find or build what's called a "Writing Table." It's a desk that's open underneath. They sometimes have a small drawer in the middle, or not.

Anyway, I've seen pre-fabbed table legs at Home Depot in the same aisle where you find all of the moldings and some of the general wood stock (not the construction lumber). But, they might not be tall enough for your purposes.

So, another option might be the pre-fabbed outdoor deck rail posts. You can find them at HD or Lowe's in the decking section and they should be available in longer lengths than the standard table legs. I'd avoid the pressure-treated ones unless you're going to paint over them, and even then I wouldn't really want to bring them inside. But you might be able to find them in cedar or un-treated pine. Then, you can use them as-is or cut them down to whatever length you need, and finish them to match your table-top.

Do you plan on putting a heavy computer monitor on the desk, or any other heavy items? If so then it's possible a hollow-core door wouldn't be stable enough. But, if you're just using it for writing, then a hollow-core door is probably all you need.

I'm not sure how you want to place the desk, but if you're willing to put it against a wall, then you could support the entire back of it with a cleat that you attach to the wall. Then you'd only need front legs to support it, and that should provide enough reinforcement so that you could use a hollow-core door and still place heavy objects on it.

Just a few thoughts... good luck!

look in your local newspaper --garage sales-- I sold a table I paid 350 for at a garage sale for 45--wife wanted a new one!!

My now wants that sort of table instead of a desk--a drawing table-- we're going to get one at an unfiished furniture store --125 then match it to the furniture in the room-- chairs have all the costs at 59 a piece
