Syracuse 2006 as a case study for texas 5 seed

Remember a couple of years ago where syracuse went into the big east tournament squarely on the bubble, won four games in four days and was given a 5 seed (before losing to aggy in the tourney)?

I don't see why this wouldn't be us, excpet I guess for the fact that the quality of team we are beating to get the tourney crown is dogshit.

But, if they could play their way from the bubble to a 5 I don't think its unrealistic to think Texas could still get a 5 seed.

All I know is that if this years team wins the conference tourney I'm going to laugh my *** off. After making the semis 9 of the last 11 years, with our final four team not even making it that far it's astounding to me that Texas has never won the conference tourney.

If this seriously flawed, maddening, inconsistent "team" won the conference tourney it'd be pretty bizzare.

Here's hoping they do. I don't think I could be disappointed in them even if they flamed out in the first round if that happened.

Strange game sometimes

Syracuse beat much better competition to get there:

Opening round - fellow bubble team Cincy
2nd Round - NCAA #1 seed UCONN
3rd Round - NCAA #7 seed Georgetown
4th Round - NCAA #5 seed Pitt

That's 4 quality wins, with 1 very high quality win to end the season. They worked from a possible bubble/12 seed to a 5.

The conference as a whole had 8 bids, with 2 #1 seeds.

By comparison:
1st round - Colorado - awful - sub 100 RPI.
2nd round - Kansas St. - Probable NIT participant.
3rd round - Baylor - not in NCAA or NIT picture at start of tourney.
4th round - Mizzou or OK. St. At best #3 seed.

It just is not an impressive run, with only 1 quality win. We are starting from a baseline of an 8/9 seed, however, so you never know.

I expect a 6/7 with a conference tourney championship.

They certainly had a couple of much gbetter wins in their trek through their tourney, but they had much further to climb.

Doesn't look like it will matter if we cough up this hairball to baylor.

Syracuse has a good coach and an actual point guard, oh and McNamara knew how to step it up...this team is totally lost out there

seriously? have you watched this team?

of course now its hindsight and all and I do have a special allegiance not just to the bball team but to the longhorns in general, but this team is getting about what they deserved for their season results and quite frankly it's slightly behind where their pre-season ranking should have been.

Win one this year and i'll be happy and anythin after that is march madness.

I call bullcrap.

That Syracuse team was totally and completely average, as shown by their body of work for the year.

They happened to get really lucky and hot in the big east tourney (but for a buzzer beater they'd have gone one and done with no tourney bid) and they proved how average they were by getting worked by A&M a year before they were a really good team.

This Texas team is startlingly bad by normal comparrison. I've given up on them for the past month or so, but thought that we could win the conference tourney when all the dominos fell our way.

Twas not meant to be, no biggie. I hope we can play into the second round. My favorite four days in sports is the first four of the NCAA tourney. If we can manage a win that will make all the bball watching much more fun for me while I'm on spring break.

If not, se la vi, I expect nothing from this team after their horrible effort at OU and non-competing there like few of Rick's teams ever have.

I am very excited about next year however. If this is the worst that it gets I'm very happy with the status of this program.

No, we aren't Kansas, or Duke or UNC but I'll argue with absolutely anyone who tries to say we are not a top 10 program in college hoops right now and have been for most of the decade.
