Sylven Landesberg

Landesberg is averaging 17.8 pts, 6.1 rbs, and 2.8 assists in 34 minutes per game for Virginia as a freshman. Pretty impressive numbers against ACC competition, no less. Hindsight is 20/20, but we turned him down in favor of going after longshots like Tyreke Evans and Devin Ebanks. Given the flop that J'Covan Brown's recruiting turned out to be, it's hard not to think about how much better the team would be had we just gone with Landesberg. He probably wouldn't be averaging those numbers playing for Texas, but we'd have a SG with size, who can shoot from 3pt territory...I've forgotten what that looks like on a UT roster.

Yeah, but we just had this discussion on another thread. SL, you led the discussion and we went through all the hits and misses. Just did not want it to be piled on when already discussed.

No, I agree.

I just really get tired of people bringing up players Texas never really had much of a shot at. At least with Landesberg it looks like Texas might have been able to get him if they'd wanted to.

I thought Sylven's lack of elite quickness would be more of a liability than it has proven to be. His ability to put the ball in the basket makes up for any physical deficiency (although it wasnt that bad in the 1st place) One thing this proves is if given the option always take a shooter when you have a chance. Having just one more shooter on this team would do wonders for our post spacing and driving lanes.

Did UT stop going hard after Landesberg to go after Tyreke Evans, or was it so Jordan Hamilton and Avery Bradley would feel better about coming to UT? Sorry I don't remember and wasn't involved in the other thread.

While Landesberg's numbers listed in the OP are impressive, his 3-point percentage is just 31%, and he doesn't often shoot very well in ACC games. He went 8-for-10 at Duke, but that game was over in the first five minutes. He was great vs. BC (32 pts) and in an OT win over Clemson, but I wonder how he'd do in a conference where the defense is a good deal better.

But his last name is Jewish-sounding, so I like him.

There wasn't a direct correlation between Landesberg and another player. Barnes just decided he didn't want him after all, regardless of other options.

As we've seen since, he wants Avery Bradleys, Jordan Hamiltons, Shawn Williams, Daniel Bejaranos, Tristan Thompsons, and Myck Kabongos.

I guess we can fit Varez Ward and Jai Lucas in there as well, but they don't make as compelling an argument.

Kabongo is a HS sophomore. Thompson and Bejarano are HS juniors. None of them, in my opinion, make for a compelling argument for passing on Landesberg. Bradley and Hamilton, sure, are superior prosepcts. Shawn Williams seems at best like a comparable talent.

On the other hand, the team is poorly balanced this year, in large part due to a poor recruiting class this past year. Pointing to recruits that are 2-3 years away from showing up on campus is not a compelling argument.

I think you're taking it the wrong way. I was surprised when Texas passed on him. I'm not necessarily excited about it now.

But if we all want to stick our thumbs up our ***, and bemoan the fact we as fans don't have Sylvan Landesberg on this team, then I guess we have that option.

All I'm saying is that Barnes seems to be looking for a little something more in the players he offers than what Landesberg brings.

I realize what class these players are in, but if you bring in Landesberg, there's a good chance he's going to affect the 2011 class --- along with the 2009 and 2010 class --- because Landesberg is not really the kind of player who is going to be leaving early.

Barnes obviously decided against it, and frankly, with the way he's been rolling in recruiting, I can at least somewhat get it.

Again, you want to be ticked off, go ahead. Personally, I don't think of Landesberg as the missing piece the way I did with Maurice Evans for the 2002-3 team, CJ Miles for the 2005-6 team, or Patrick Christopher for the 2007-8 team. He probably could've helped, but this squad wasn't going to be special just because Landesberg was on the roster.

Maurice Evans wouldn't have been on that Final Four team, SL. He was a junior the year before TJ got there, and if he would have stayed, he would have been a senior on the team that lost to Oregon in the Sweet Sixteen. Yes, we would have been a likely Elite Eight team that year since we lost to Oregon by two I believe, but we don't get by Kansas in the next round...

I think that Sylven would have been exactly what this team needs. He's an omni-purpose player who is big and can shoot from the outside. He would have replaced Mason in the starting lineup and given us a second perimeter threat. The inside is already poppin' and Balbay has been playing reasonably well at PG considering his utter lack of shooting ability. Match made in heaven...
