Switzer Admits to Cheating

Stanhin, me too. If Switzer wouldn't come clean after Royal passed away, I suppose that he never will.

One of my favorite sayings attributed to DKR: "Will Rogers Never Met Barry Switzer." Makes me smile even now...

Barry has openly admitted that he gave $2,500 to Billy Sims to keep him from going pro.

Hate him all you want, and yes he did cheat regularly, but no coach ever cared more about his players than Switzer. Nobody I hated recruiting against more; nobody I wanted to beat more; few coaches I respect more. I didn't when he was coaching but have changed my mind since.

There are few if any people I would trust more in a business deal than Barry Switzer.

This:

"What he did was teach them that having athletic skill means you deserve special treatment and that cutting corners and cheating your way to the top is the way to get ahead in life"

Nothing new or newsworthy in the OP article about Switzer. He has a highly tarnished coaching legacy in college football. Sorry Barney, spin and apologies years later will not change that.

The quotes attributed to Charles Thompson, a convicted felon can be taken with a grain of salt.

Gary Gibbs was a part of the "hell hole" from the time he was an 18 year old freshman, until he was fired as head coach in 1994. A little like having R.C. clean up the program at Hooterville from Jackie, which resulted in two more probations under R.C.

Barry once said I left the program the same way I found it, wildly successful and on a massive probation.

And I didn't create the monster, I was only hired to feed it.

My brother played at Arkansas in the 1960's when Barry was an assistant, When he died suddenly in 2001 he had wrote my Mother and letter telling her how terribly sorry he was and what a wonderful job she had done raising him. His note to her was something she cherished until the day she died.

Barry's ex-wife said that she was a very, very, very ex-wife. But with that said, no children had ever had a better father, and for that she could forgive him anything.

Ah, the charming con man, icon of Americana. So personable, so witty, charming, then he talks you into giving him your life savings and absconds with the funds.
I understand he was brought in to maintain the status quo there, just keep cheating and winning. I understand he rationalized every illegal act as OK because he grew up poor and unsupervised.
I understand when poor people rob 7-11's for drug money.
All in all, though, it is not right. If other teams can't do the things OU did, that makes the charming con man a lowdown dirty cheating scum. Fans want their sports to be fair, not rigged. They pay a lot of money to attend games, and don't want to feel like suckers afterwards, when they find out the other team was playing with a stacked deck.
...and the horse he rode in on.

Another good Switzer story

The 1978 Orange Bowl was 6th-ranked Arkansas (then in the SWC) vs. #2 ou (then in the Big 8). We were #1 at the time. The Dirt Burglars were heavily favored but Piglet killed them 31-6. The story of that game involved Switzer and his hand-picked DC - Larry Lacewell.

"... a pretty solid rumor of an affair between Switzer and Lacewell's wife. Lacewell or his private detective caught them 'running offensive plays' in Lacewell's house while Lacewell was on a recruiting trip. It was about 2 weeks before the 1978 Orange bowl game with Arkansas.

Apparently Switzer and the wife never knew.

Mobilhoma was heavily favored. Lacewell was said to have provided every Mobilhoma defensive set for every down and distance to Arkansas. Lacewell fidn't change anything the first half while Arkansas was running up the score. Halftime score was 14-0 and got to 24-0 before Mobilhoma finally scored. Lacewell supposedly confronted Switzer at halftime, resigned, and filed for divorce the next day. His wife supposedly got some bucks from some Mobilhoma alumni so she would sign the papers and go away, keeping the details quiet."

"Running offensive plays" LULZ.

Lou Holtz was given credit for the win by the media but he had nothing to do with it

"Running Offensive Plays" :lmao:

Yeah, I think it has been pretty well established about Switzer and Lacewell's wife back in the day but I had never heard the part about Larry Lacewell assisting arky with ou defensive sets.

ou had a pretty good team that season and arky was good but I thought it odd at the time arky seemed to get a big lead fast in that game. Now I know why.

Lacewell later admitted he disguised himself and was the ou spy at a UT practice the week before the 1972 Texas - ou game. Key intelligence he got was a quick kick that ou blocked and got a TD off... blowing open the game IIRC.

There's certainly much to be said about Switzer's amorality. But I will give him his due, his players treat him as a father figure. The cult of personality is strong with BS.

Recommend reading on Switzer: "Bootlegger's Boy" ... sorry cannot remember the authors name and my book is in a box somewhere.

Comparing Jenkins or Jackie to Barry Switzer seems really sort of flawed. If not just flat out silly. Barry ran an outlaw program and won a bunch of Big 8 championships and 3 national titles (and played for 3 others). Jackie Sherill was cheating on at least the same level, and never won a big game in his life.

And as he said, "I didn't create the monster. I was just hired to feed it". While I hated him on the second Saturday of October for a number of years, his relationship with my brother when they were at Arkansas, and his kindness to our Mother when my brother died, the man I know is the one that Sabre noted he would be in a business deal with any day of the week.

Kbrown,

Have you ever met the man?

Have you ever sat face to face and talked football with him?

Have you ever talked business with him?

Have you ever talked family with him?

Did you ever go head to head recruiting in his peak in Norman?

Did he ever call you to ask your help trying to talk some sense into a kid?

if it makes you feel better, he still can’t figure out why I don’t like Bosworth, although I admire his ability to promote himself above his talent level.

Not trying to change your mind, but I know Barry for what he was and what he is. Like everyone, there’s some good and some not so good.
