Swimming Pools - Child Safety

With the 6 child drownings this week in Houston, my wife and I are looking to add some extra layers of protection for our 15-month old boy who's now taken to exploring the backyard.

Currently, we have only 2 real layers of protection...alarm when door opens...and a picket fence between the backdoor deck and the pool.

We're looking at the removable safety fences along with the Safety Nets. The in-laws have the safety fences installed around their pool, and they've had no problems with it, other than the aesthetics.

I'm wondering about the mesh Safety Nets. They seem to be an even better option, as they cannot be removed by children, they don't corrode from the chlorine, they support 4,000 lbs of weight, and they can be removed/replaced in less than 5 minutes.

Has anyone had one of these Safety Nets installed in their pool? Do you recommend it? Pros/Cons? Any info is appreciated!

I'm an underwriter with a large insurance company, and the pool safety nets are one of the options we accept/recommend for our insureds who have a pool in an unfenced yard (neighborhood deed restrictions, etc...). They have an excellent safety record (no recorded drownings, when used properly) and are easy to use/manage. I wouldn't suggest/recommend the pool alarms, or a "solid" cover. They each have their own problems and flaws.

Overall, your best bet to protect your own child, as well as any others, is going to be the safety net.

Mr. Football, go toThe Link They will have some Info for you. This is a safety fence made the company that makes one of the best pool covers on the market. If you contact them they most likely will give you a name of a contractor who can help you. Good Luck.

Make sure that you are up to date on all your emergency training. I was once at a pool party where a small child almost drowned. This was with maybe 30-40 people in and around the pool. The owner of the pool knew exactly what to do, and by the time EMS arrived, the child was already OK (but scared).

Dude....I'm not sure if your kid is too old but....

You need to send your toddler to "infant swimming survival school."

This is a TOTAL MUST if you have a young child with a pool in the backyard.

They basically teach your child to survive in a pool if they fall in and no one is around.

My sister-in-law did this with her 10 month old baby and they showed us this past weekend what happens. She basically DROPPED her daughter (now 15 months) into the pool (yes, we were freaking out!) and we watched the baby start kicking it's hands and feet, she flipped over and rose to the surface, breathing air on her back.

It was totally freaky!!!! Anyways, you should definately check into these lesssons.
