Swagcopter in a Jet fight...

A terrific one-liner emerged (courtesy TOR at shaggybevo) which made it to hornsports.com also today.
"Never bring a swagcopter to a corporate jet fight.
"

That line is apt on all kinds of levels. Quite true. Guess how many recruits Charlie is visiting this week? 35. That's right 35 recruits (both 2015 and 2016) are scheduled to be visited at home by Charlie this week, all over the place. Hectic pace.

It started with a flight to Tallahassee this morning, where he wrapped up the Burt commitment. Guys have been doing flight tracking. Then they were back to Houston and it seems more UT coaches joined. On the way to Cedar Hills. Guess how many UT coaches visited Demarkus Lodge today? SEVEN. That is pretty much the whole UT coaching group out there, to meet Lodge.

This is going to go on this week, as Charlie jet-sets all over the place. Sumlin and gang are sorta shell-shocked that Charlie has this all going at jet-speed and they can't catch him.

That resulted in the above one-liner. Love it.

Sounds like Charlie has his team working at full capacity.

From a regular fan perspective, this is exactly the kind of thing that most of us never have a real clue about, all the behind-the-scenes hard work that goes into pursuing the talent that makes a program a championship contender.

This is going to pay off.

That is why I like the one liner. It implies some heavy preparation and hard work in a serious fight. Put in the hard work to convince the recruits. "No gadgets" as Charlie said. Well, that is not true; we do give them cookie-cakes with "Welcome Demarkus Burt" and all that, which are set up nicely in a spread on the bed when they reach their hotel rooms (big hit this year with the recruits, it seems). But what Charlie and gang have been doing is some serious recruiting with some extremely careful planning. You can fly in on a swagcopter to an HS and try to impress them initially, but then you need to do the right sell job, convincing the parents and all that. In the end it is a jet fight.

Hope it all finishes the way everybody says it will. If not, this is all putting the cart in front of the horse....

I also like how Charlie never seems to let anything get under his skin much in recruiting. There was a story the day after Lodge visited us, about an HS coach who was pretty much slamming Charlie Strong on texags, generally not showing much respect for Charlie. He seemed upset at Lodge and Murray visiting Texas, so he must have some a&m leaning. Then it turned out that he was a Mr. James Sapp (something like that; I didn't follow the story though it was reported on 247), an assistant coach at Cedar Hill HS. I believe the head coach Joey McGuire there is a good guy and not anti-Texas or anything though.

Anyway, people seem to guess that James Sapp might have been a cause for a Demarkus Lodge tweet the next day, "It's crazy when your own coaches say bad thing about you. So ready to get out of here" (something like that. I did see the tweet but Lodge deleted it very quickly once he cooled down). We don't know if Mr.Sapp had anything to do with it, and he says he has nothing against Charlie too

Well, guess who was on a 2-person photograph that hit the internet from Cedar Hill HS, standing with Charlie Strong who is showing his trademark ear-to-ear smile? The same James Sapp. Looks like stuff is all taken care of. I am sure Charlie knows what happened, but he has no time for petty ego fights with HS coaches. He has work to do. We need to get Lodge out of there and bring him to Austin first, somehow. Get on the train, or we will smile and leave with the train!

That is one quality I have noticed being reported on recruiting sites all through this recruiting cycle. Nothing stops our coaches from recruiting anybody from anywhere, it seems. Personalities and all don't matter. If the kid is good, and you want him, just go try to get him.

All good stuff. Thanks, guys. The outcome of this big push and the whole process is to also sew that which will pay dividends from now on: in the personal quality that comes from the staff, and from the fan base. Horns have acted first class from everything I have seen.

I guess this thread is for a bit of sunshine pumping on what looks like some badass recruiting by Charlie (which should end at least in a top-8 class, even if he doesn't pull off the big daylight bank robbery), let us continue the pumping....

It seems Chip Brown said something today and referred to this ESPN article from late June last year - Texas has a state recruiting problem ... Interesting to see how much things have changed since then in 7 months. Amazing.

Incidentally, one coach quoted is the same Joey McGuire of Cedar Hills (who everybody says is considered as perhaps the best HS coach in all of Texas or something). He said nothing bad about CS and only mentioned the reality out there at that time though. The article was written when Lodge initially committed to A&M.

But there is an unnamed big12 assistant coach who, for lack of evidence, has to be assumed to be a land thieves' coach IMHO, said this:

Charlie don't need no jet. Why do you think he runs 5 miles a day? Gotta be in shape for crootin' season! The man's a beast on so many levels.

Getting Joey McGuire would certainly not hurt in landing the state's best WR recruit, Demarkus Lodge, though Lodge seems to be an independent sort of guy, and some recruiting reporters say he will do what he wants anyway.

Kyler Murray definitely has more leverage on Lodge than McGuire (but Lodge has a lot of influence on Murray too). Pretty damn interesting stuff.

Speaking of the "jet fight" going on, I saw something interesting that aggy recruiting reporter Jeff Tarpley (of aggy247) said yesterday in their online chat when somebody asked him about whether all these things about the kids Texas is after being a package deal was correct.

Tarp said rather sarcastically, "it's a Japanese navy battle plan on their part" (about Texas and Charlie)... When pressed to expound on what he meant by that, Tarp goes, "Unnecessarily complicated and everything has to go according to plan on your side and that of your opponent for it to work".

LOL. Pretty correct description of how Charlie is attacking from all sides. It may or may not work perfectly in the end, but there is no doubt that aggy is fully under siege now. They can feel it. And they are quite worried about who the heck they are up against in future too. They never had a clue that "three star Chollie" had all this in him. Scared is the word in aggyland.

Swagcopter. Corporate jet.

Pffffttt!!

I hear Charlie has some engineering prof named Montgomery Scott working 24/7 out at the Pickle Research Center on something called a transporter system.

Probably not ready for this year's recruiting battles; when asked if he's making progress, Scott said:

"Aye, I'm doin' the best I can, man, I'm not a miracle worker. Say, you wouldn't have a sandwich and a shot of whisky on you would you?"

Charlie seemed to rank in the 50's in recruiting at Louisville. But his teams always ended much better than the recruiting ranks. So now he is getting 4 and 5 star players. It's going to be very exciting to see how well he does with this much talent. We're in good hands with Charlie and I can't wait.
