SW Houston Apartments

I am will be working in Sugar Land here in the near future. I'm 28 and single, so I'd like to find a place closer to downtown, but I also don't want to have to drive very far to work. Any suggestions for apartments on the SW side?

I actually stayed near the Med Center. The drive down 90 took about 20 minutes, which was well worth it because I'm just not a big fan of Sugar Land. Plus, I think there's been substantial construction completed which should get rid of some stop lights.

The drive down 59 from West U/ Galleria area took all of about 12 minutes, even at 8am. Just like the driving on 90, it's against traffic both ways.

From what I could tell, the apartment prices aren't that much better in SL either. So in conclusion, I really can't think of any compelling reason to actually live there.

Wish I could be more helpful. Did you sell your house?

You're not going to find much to desire between the Galleria and Sugar Land. The key to your search is to try find something very convenient to the Southwest Freeway.

I used to live here: The Boulevard I had friends that lived in Sugar Land. I could drive from my apartment to the freeway in about 60 seconds. From there, it was smooth sailing at 60 MPH all the way.

There are two Camden properties (Camden Greenway and Camden Plaza) on the north side of the freeway. They offer similar access to US-59.

If you want to save a little money (don't we all?), try the Greenbriar Chateau. SImilar access, but 1960's vintage apartments.

The last thing you want to do is have to negotiate the 59 to 610 interchage every day. Crossing under 610 on 59, however, isn't bad at all.

You'll also have easy access to everything else in town that a 28 year old single person is looking for.

I agree with Bernard. Find something in the Galleria area or inside the loop with easy access to 59. Anything past (south) of the Galleria is going to be pretty sketchy. Take a look at the area around south of 59 on Weleyan. Its the first exit inside the loop on 59 and its a quiet area, but close to everything. There's also the Camden complex across the freeway on Buffalo Speedway.

I just moved out of Camden Greenway (Buffalo Speedway and 59) after living there for 2 years. Definitely the best bet for meeting all your needs. Very easy commute to and from there on my way to SW houston. Also very close to what a 28 year old single guy needs.

I agree with these guys. I lived by Rice Village (Camden Vanderbilt) for 2+ years and LOVED it, and it was reasonably priced. I'm also familiar with Camden Greenway, and it's a great place as well and not too expensive. Traffic won't be an issue since you're moving around in reverse. I make the commute from the Heights every day to Tomball to work at HP, and it's about 30 minutes door to door, each way. I'd really suggest this for anyone who is driving against traffic. Also, there's a couple of Post properties that aren't bad RIGHT behind the Home Depot at 59 and 610. Post Pink Oak Park and Pin Oak Green. Check those out. Should give you easy access to all the freeways as well.

Pin Oak Park and Pin Oak Green are very nice. Convenient too. They are a little further from the action, but convenient to 610 and the Galleria area. Doublecheck the access to 59 South. It may have changed since they redid 610 a few years ago.
Camden Vanderbuilt is quite nice, but it's too far from 59 for serious consideration. You don't want to have drive all the way from 59 to Bellaire / Holcombe every day.

I'm serious about being VERY close to 59. No further north than Richmond, maybe Alabama. No further south than Bissonnet.

Look into The Belmont on Bissonnet too. It's 15-16 years old, but still in great shape. Not cheap though.

I know 2 girls that live at Pin Oak Park, its easy to get to 59, you take newcastle. Pretty nice place. That area is what I would reccomend as well.

I disagree.

I drove by there yesterday on my way home from Home Depot. While it's easy to get on 59 North, it's not as easy to get on 59 South, which is the way he'll be commuting every day. You either have to go in-bound all the way to Weslayan and make a U-turn or you have to go south all the way to Bellaire Blvd and take 610 North to 59 South.

Another alternative would be to take Westpark to Chimney Rock to 59 South.

The Weslayan U-turn isn't then end of the world, but I hate having to drive one way just to turn around and drive the other way.

Pin Oak is cheaper that the other places listed above. It's a little closer to the office, but a little further from the action. I've know many people who have lived there and liked it.

I appreciate all the advice. It looks like my house is going to sell soon, so I need to get serious about finding a place. I blew off Sugar Land. I don't like any of the places around here and if I don't get into B-school, I will be living here for at least another year and a half.

I understand the point about not being north of Alabama. But does that apply inside the loop and outside the loop? I am looking at couple of places. One is near San Felipe and Hilcroft and the other is near Westheimer and Chimney Rock.

You mean San Felipe and Voss? If so, that's a good area... as for Westheimer and Chimney Rock, I would probably vote elsewhere. Depends... what are the places called/what are they?
