Sushi at Chon Som

So I had dinner tonight at Chon Som in Wells Branch and it is easily one of my favorite sushi spots in town. They have a sushi happy hour until 7, and the nigiri is a $1 each. The salmon is incredible, as is the yellowtail and super white tuna. The Dynamite Shrimp appetizer is the best $5 spent on food in this town. The quality of the food and friendly service make it worth a trip if you are looking for sushi in N. Austin, or any part of town for that matter. Hope you give it a try.

I love escolar, and a lot of people call it white tuna, but it's really not. It has several names, one of which is "oil fish" and it can cause gastro-intestinal distress issues, so eat it with caution. Apparently it is either not sold in Japan, or must be sold with a warning required by Japan's equivalent of the FDA.

Anyway, it's one of my favorites, and I'll usually eat 2 or 3 pieces of it any time I order sushi or sashimi-- I've ever experienced any GI issues, but I also don't eat sushi more than once every couple of weeks. Just a wanring to be on the lookout for this.

Also, thanks for the recommendation. I'm always looking for decent, inexpensive sushi.

Interesting. I've been getting my haircut at the Great Clips next door for years, but never gone into Chon Som. I'll have to try their sushi.

Snow Pea on Jefferson has "white tuna" (escolar) and it is quite tasty. From what I have read, oil fish is worse than escolar as far as creating the gastro fits. I had four pieces of escolar once and did have the orange poops, but it wasn't too bad. Still, I would go slow on it. It is delicious.
