Surround Sound

I ordered a surround sound system using credit card points, and now I realize I don't know much about it. It is 5.1 Bravia.

Which stuff (types of media) will utilize which speakers. I know there are two front speakers that will pretty much play everything. Will the back speakers be silent unless there is a DVD with surround sound? How about the center speaker and sub-woofer?

I usually listen to radio or watch sports on TV so I'm starting to think I may not get much value out of this system.

Any thoughts?
Thanks

dvds, bluray, movies on hbo, etc will come in in 5 channel sound. Think some sporting events will benefit. Not sure if the NFL broadcasts in 5 channel sound but I definitely hear sound out of my rear speakers.

most of the sony htibs have dolby pro logic II and dts neo:6 decoders which take stero and convert it to a "simulated" 5.1 surround.

there are settings where the receiver can utilize all the speakers. it should be pretty simple once you get the manual.
