Summer Freshmen Class of 2004

Hey,
I have always been a huge fan of the University of Texas and just this week I recieved my acceptance letter into UT. However, the letter states that I was accepted into the "Summer Class of 2004" meaning that I would have to enroll in early June destroying all of the plans I had made for the summer. While I really want to go to UT, I am anxious and a bit frightened at the thought of entering college a full 3 months earlier than I had originally planned. I am scared that I will not know anyone down there and won't have a clue what to do in my spare time. Now I know the bar scene in Austin is great, but if i am to go to a bar I need to be sure that as a 17 year old I will not be carded. This is one area where yall can assist me. My parents are a bit psycho about alcohol, but college with out it is unacceptable.
Now don't get on to me for this but if I was not to enroll at UT I would go to Baylor where my brother (MaduroBU) attends. I hate Baylor just as much as the next guy but if I went there I would be able to enroll in the fall and also not have to worry about making friends. Now what I need from y'all is some advice about where to have a good time, meet people, and just general info to make my life as easy as possible at UT.

Thanks,
Toyster

Couple points:

I had 3-4 friends who came to the summer session when they started. They all came in in the same boat as you: didn't know anyone. But the great thing about dorms, is that you'll get to meet alot of people really quick, and find some that you'll want to hang out with on a regular basis. I've lived in the dorms at UT and at American University in DC (I did a semester there on a program) without knowing a soul at either place, and came out of it with some really great friends. And being out of your parent's house a full 3 months earlier has so many positives, you can't even fathom it yet. Go for it. Tust me on this one.

And if you can't find something to do in your spare time in Austin, I don't know how to help you. With the parks, Barton Springs, the veloway, Lake Travis, Hamilton Pool, etc. to do all summer, you shouldn't have any problem having a blast.

As to the bars, either you need to be 21, have a good fake, or know soeone who works there. But you don't need to go to the bars to have a good time. I went my first 2.5 years at UT without setting foot in a bar, but I still got drunk nearly every weekend my freshman year. At parties, in the dorm with new friends, you'll find alcohol is easy to come by, to say the least. And as I understand it, summer session is even more of a party.

I don't know what you are talking about. Alcohol is terrible, and will get you into all sorts of trouble. You should never drink. Drinking can seriously affect your relationship with your parents if you violate their trust....ESPECIALLY IF YOUR BROTHER DOES NOT CHECK THE MAIL LIKE HE IS SUPPOSED TO!

Also, I told you I was gonna use that line for a sig.

Your from Longview, right? Just thank god you can get out of that place a little earlier than expected.

You'll have no problems finding anything you want in Austin during the summer.

I drive the UT Shuttle buses. I have met many a freshman in the summer and given out many directions to stuff and ideas on what to do. They really need to have a session where they spell out how many things the shuttle buses go near.

You will have so much stuff at the ready, as hornian says, it will make your headspin. You will meet people who have cars but you won't need one to be honest.

Ride each shuttle bus at least once to see where they go and make notice of streets. Don't try to memorize them, that will come in time. Just get the idea of what is out there...not nec. stuff along the route but stuff on the route that is near a stop. Write that place down and the stop for future reference. Which bus gets you to the HEB food store for better munchies and less expensive than Jester Store? What if you want to go to Waterloo Records, Target, Office Depot, etc...all is one ride away.

You will be so far ahead of the others it won't be funny. They will look to you to show them around, even girls. You may actually get a girl before you are a soph., haha. There is sooo much around campus too.

Don't hesitate one second to come in the summer and learn where the buildings are. What the street names are. Just what the difference between all the "Malls" are...South, West, etc... You will be glad you did. All of us cannot be wrong.

If you need help as your arrival date draws near, send me a pm and I will do what I can to help you. I am working this summer and will be on campus every weekday. I always have time to help out a Hornfans person.

I was in the same boat as you 5 years ago. I left for Austin 2-3 weeks after i graduated hs. I have rarely been home since. Summertime in Austin is about as good as it gets. As far as meeting people goes there are people every where just be friendly...you can meet people in your dorm, in class, at church (if you swing that way) at parties (there wil be plenty of parties in W campus even in the summer) etc....

Hope that helps, congrats on your acceptence be sure and take care of your schoolwork in the summer and you'll be on the road to the best 4 (or 5 maybe 6) years of your life.

i was in your shoes 2 years ago....ironically between here and baylor as well. coming in the summer was the best decision i ever made. going to UT, you wont be sorry coming in the summer. they make you join a FIG and everything dont they? is so you will meet a ton a ppl besides those living by you. most ppl in the summer are doing the same thing you are and dont know anyone either. itll work out well

Do NOT make a college choice based on where your HS buddies/girlfriend are going. There is no point, and you wont be friends with over 90% of those people in a few years anyway.

Then you come to Austin vs. Waco. Tough one, eh?
