Summer Camp at Texas

pretty neat visuals on the main WBB camp page. I recognize some of those fans in the "Tradition of Excellence" slide.

looking forward to going to watch the staff work their first camp this Sunday at the Fundamental Camp.

Gotta remember NCAA rules: can't have contact with campers or parents to be on the safe side. Just gonna observe quietly.

Yup, dropped my daughter off at camp today. I didn't see this thread before I posted, but things have changed at camp this season it appears.

I wanted to get an early look at the staff at a camp. I went to the fundamental camp this past Monday and Tuesday evenings. I saw lots of ex players. Primarily was able to watch Amie run the sessions at Cooley. I was able to sit in on a session where Brady, Kayla and Cokie talked about sports they played growing up, why they chose UT, why they selected their majors and their plans for after graduation. Wish I had been able to listen in on the others as well. With the sessions split among Gregory and Cooley, those three and Anne Marie were the only players I saw this week.

They were some very well run sessions that I was able to catch. The coaches were clear about what was to happen in that session and which group was supposed to go where. It was easy to tell that Amie is used to being in charge. There was also a lot of interaction with the parents by the staff with different staff coming up at various times to welcome the parents for coming by. They are working hard at making everyone feel comfortable in stopping by.

It was interesting watching such young players. Most are learning the game. A few stood out by their body control and how well they handled the ball when dribbling. Passes weren’t as crisp as they will be in the advanced camp this weekend but you could usually see what they wanted to do. Haven’t watched players this young in years. It was a fascinating experience.

I was impressed with the efficiency and friendliness of the staff. Given the short time they have been together, it was very well run. Of course, the main staff are all experienced in putting together camps—Karen, Amie, Travis, etc. They put together a pretty seamless product that had the campers rolling through the evening sessions with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Can’t wait to see how they put the Advanced camp together. That’s this Saturday and Sunday for those that can make it. It should be a treat.

Bab, I know I don't post here (WBB) much but one of these days I am going to have to meet you. The fact that you even get excited about the youth camps is awesome. It's funny, I don't usually get to go watch much of the camps so you've probably seen more of my kid at the camp than I have.

almost always you can go in the Red River entrance. Should be able togo in around 30-45 minutes before the camp tips off at 1 pm.

With the motorcycle rally going on, parking might be a bit of a problem, hope not.

I'm not 100% sure about Lot108 specifically, but I know that most of the UT lots along Red River have changed their signs and no longer allow any public parking in the evenings or on weekends. Be sure to read the signs.

Got a chance to go to the Advanced Camp this past Saturday and Sunday. Well organized, lots of enthusiasm, high energy level. Saw quite a number of exes there working as camp coaches including, in no particular order: Edna Campbell, Tiffany Jackson, Earnie Williams, Virigina Vivcrette Flores (played 94-99), Tamra Cobbins, Fran Harris, and Benita Pollard. I'm sure I missed some.

Met a couple of managers for the coming year: Chase Harding and Brook Brashear. Chase has been here before while I believe this will be Brook’s first season.

Saw the drills run by a number of different coaches on the different courts. The theme running through all was effort and communication. Doing things the right way and talking to each other during the drills, especially in group drills, so that teammates would know where you were, were repeated time and again. If nothing else, the campers will come away knowing that they can’t be “silent” players, they have to speak up and communicate with their teammates during drills and games.

Saw Cokie, Brady, Anne Marie, Kayla, Nneka, Chelsea, and Chas from the current players leading the campers, demoing the drills and being team coaches as well as acting as refs. Ro was there as well but recovering from surgery. She was running around on a burnt orange scooter. I saw Shanice sometime also. She is recovering from ACL surgery some months ago. Watched them play Saturday night. Brady has that 3pter nailed down. Nneka got several layups by getting out in front of everyone on missed shots by the opposing team. Got to watch Imani swat a couple of shots away. Everyone looks in decent shape. I think after a summer with Shaun they will be ready from the start. Got to meet the new players: Imani, Empress and Ashley Roberts. Gigi Mazionyte is still in Lithuania (Poland) getting her paperwork ready to come to Austin and Celina Rodrigo signed too late to register for the first semester.
I love to watch people, partly because of my hearing loss, I have to watch to see what is going on around me, partly because for a number of years I was legally blind and could only see out of the corners of my eyes. I saw a staff that was excited about the camp and passed that on to the campers. I saw teammates that appear to have a strong rapport on the court. Lots of people having fun, being serious when it time, working hard, playing hard. Campers are striving to be better players and some that will play in college.

There were a number of players here that following of WBB recruiting are probably familiar with beginning with Kelsey Lang, 6-4 post from the Woodlands. A big strong post with a soft touch from outside. Lilley VanderZee, 6-4 post from Granbury, also stood out. Very active, good rebounder, finished inside well. Both are in the class of 2013. Another 2013 player was among the three fastest I recall seeing at the camp: JaQuan Jackson of Harker Heights. The other two are Kyra Lambert, 5-7 PG from Cibolo Steele (class of 2015) and 2017 5-6 PG Chasity Patterson from Cunningham Middle School. Patterson is going to have coaches drooling in the next few years. Extremely fast, quick, excellent passer and good shooter. Very quick hands on D as well. All three are similar but what really makes Patterson stand out is her ability to compete with players that will be seniors in high school at her age. I was also impressed with the quickness and intensity of Mckinley Bostad of Kennedale (5-10 G, Class of 2014) and G Jasmin Taylor. Both good passers and ballhandlers. Taylor is a very physical defender. Artavia Ford stood out during a scrimmage for her aggressive post defense and rebounding. She’s a 6-3 post from Colleyville Heritage HS in the class of 2014. Sky-Lynn Holmes (6-2 F from Pine Tree HS, Class of 2015), Lashann Higgs (5-9 PG fromC Cedar Ridge HS, Class of 2015) and Jordan Hosey (6-2 F from Manvel HS, Class of 2015) also were impressive.

There was a lot of speed on display, lots of physical play inside and on the perimeter. To paraphrase the Spurs coach: “ this is a game for big girls.”

It was great to see such gung-ho attitude by campers and coaches during these past two days. I really liked the Q&A sessions they had. They were very informative about the program and about what is needed to compete at the college level. Loved the skit that the Texas team put on at half time of the second all star game. It was hilarious. I really liked seeing so many of our Texas players walking around without braces or boots (Nneka still has her brace but that doesn’t slow her down any). Nneka looks like she’s gotten taller but that could be wishful thinking on my part.

Time to take a break from computers for a week. Looking forward to seeing who we get from the class of 2013 and to seeing this team on the court.

Great report Bab. Glad to hear Brady is playing. I remember watching her high school videos and was impressed with her shooting touch from 3-point land.

Can you tell me if players have to be invited to the Advanced Camp or if it's open to anyone who wants to attend?

Technically I don't think any university could have an invite-only camp due to recruiting guidelines. I know this camp is open, but they do "advise" you that it is not for average "rec" players and that those who attend should be the type that are very serious about their basketball.

Thanks for the response Son.

I was just asking since it seems the football team had "invite-only" camps the past couple of weekends. It appears that the reason the football teams have these camps is to gauge what players may be offered scholarships.

I don't know about football, but I am fairly certain that no wbb program can have an "invite only" camp. They do hope that only those serious players come, but there is no guarantee.

Hey Babhorn,
thanks for the update, where all the current players there? did they play? how'd the look?

I'm interested also in how the coaches and current players got along... any insight would be appreciated!

Keep your horns up my friends!
