Suit Jacket vs Sports Coat vs Blazer

I wear jeans to work, and outside of suits at weddings and stuff, I rarely dress up. I am heading to a business party, and this is the dress advice, “Attire is fun and festive, but professional – not too causal or cocktail.”

Was thinking of getting a tan suit to wear without a tie, but it may be overkill…so I may just find a sports coat or blazer, but have been looking for an excuse to buy a beige / tan suit…if so, what’s the lowdown on suit jackets worn with another pair of slacks?

Sport coat and dress slacks is what I would wear. Definitely less formal than a matching suit without a tie and still more dressy than what most people think as business casual.
