any brands to look for? I now about sealy and simmons but that's about it. I saw some good deals at Foley's but if you want a good mattress, shouldn't I go to one of the specialty mattress stores? I have no idea and im looking for a damn good one ($600-1300 w/ box spring). Never been in the market for one. thanks in advance.

You might not necessarily buy one from 'em (though we did), but The Mattress Firm is quite good. We bought a king-sized Stearns & Foster pillow top from them about a year ago. Their staff is very knowledgeable & should answer your questions better than a dept. store clerk (who may just be filling in for a section & might be selling shoes or appliances on other days). Plus they've got a 30 day, no questions asked return policy which is nice.

Spending $$ on a good mattress is money well spent. You won't regret it.

One thing to be watchful for is going w/ an ultra deep/pillow top mattress. They take very deep pocket sheets which can can cost an arm and a leg. I still think it's worth it for the extra support & comfort of the bed, but be prepared to fork over several hundred bucks for some new sheets if you're buying something your old sets won't fit.

The whole industry is set up so that you can't comparison shop, e.g. different model names at each store with slightly different specs. That being said, most people look for a high number of coils but the number of turns in each coil is important too. Plus there are lots of different types of coils. And lots of padding on top could be a sign of too few coils underneath. Do a google search. Good luck.

ballrific, after trying out about 25 mattress sets ranging in price from $800 to $3200, we settled on a Restonic (about $1100-1200 for an upper-grade king set).

We bought ours at the Sleep Shop on Burnet Rd. in Austin (not sure where you live) and had never heard of this brand. The owner explained that the company does not advertise to keep the product prices down; they rely on the retailers to recommend the product.

We have been extremely pleased with our purchase, it's the most comfortable bed we've ever owned. Our model has a firm base with a pillowtop made with memory foam. Ahhhhhh, go try it out! Here's the website: Restonic

i said this before, when you go shopping for a mattress, treat it like you are buying a car. these guys will haggle. stay there awhile, showing alot of interest, wasting the salesman's time, then say you are gonna go check out some other places to compare prices. the salesman will not let you leave. he will want to haggle because he knows that if you go somewhere else, you won't come back.

We bought our Simmons from Walmart. They only sell them online. I believe we got a lot more mattress for the money than we would have going elsewhere. I determined this by comparing features and prices to other Simmons models.

Ok, I got my Tempurpedic 2 weeks ago so here is my review thus far. I researced different mattress types for about a month before ordering one. I was initially drawn to tempurpedic because in the add, it appears that not much motion gets transmitted between two people sleeping together. This was important to us because I often have to get up in the middle of the night to go to work, and wife has to get up frequently to feed baby. We sent away for the free sample of Tempur material and the video and were impressed. I ordered the king size deluxe off their website. That is the middle of their range. They offer a thinner one and a thicker one. It cost about 2 grand. It came about 6 days later, delivered by freight guys. We tipped them. The first thing we noticed was an odd smell, but their website said it would go away in a few days and indeed it did. I love this mattress. It is very comfortable, not too firm, not too soft. You can't feel the person next to you move! So that is cool. I have slept better in the last couple of weeks than I have in a long time. Drawbacks? For some reason it sleeps warmer, so we haven't used much in the way of blankets. I recommend it completely.

Ugh. Wonderful suggestions and stories just like in all the other mattress threads. But there is a common theme and problem though. Too many suggestions and good stories. I read this and dangit, am more confused than when I started.

This stuff is so individual and not one mattress is right for everybody. So far I want that mattress that they don't advertise, I don't want too much of a pillow top if I don't get the Tempurpedic one I want now. So far, I want 3 mattresses and I will get it either at Mattress Firm or Brookstone. I expect to pay about 800 to 1,500 for a Queen sized. I need a drink, already. haha.

Seriously, great responses folks. This is a tough thing and most are not prepared w/ knowledge to shop. I, for one am not and this stuff helps alot.

I started an earlier thread and am still looking at mattresses. Perusing epinions.com sort of helps but not. I look for the opinions where they have had the mattress for a while - at least a year. A quite a few of the negative ones are 2-3 years old, so I am hoping that the problems mentioned in the posts have been improved upon.

It is worse than buying a car because the models are not the same from store to store. But latex seems to be a better thing in the mattress as well as coil turns, as someone mentioned. I have looked at the Tempurpedic, Sealy Yates (at Mattress Firm) and Spring Air Back Supporter. I am trying to decide if it is worth the drive (in unavoidable traffic) to go look at a Restonic. Have Stearns and Foster and Kingsdown on the list to investigate as well at Mattress Giant (I think).

So far Sealy Yates has the favored vote, but lots more work to do. I am really interested in opinions of anyone who has had any of these for more than a year.

Additional info - 11/06: Spent the afternoon looking at mattresses in stores and on-line. E-pinions are helpful but not. Ones that are 2-3 months old don't have a history with the mattress yet, and the old ones that are critical, those mattresses are no longer made anyway.

I ended up buying the Sealy Yates Pillow Top from Mattress Firm becasue the salesperson there let me look and go home 3 different times, did not try to strong arm me into buying right then. Also went to American Mattress, nice - but did not find one that felt better than the Sealy; Tempurpedic store - that is what started my original post; and Mattress Giant - would not let me leave, and I wouldn't buy because of that.

Mattress gets delivered tomorow. I hope my back and I can get a good night's sleep tomorrow night.

OK - we bought the big Sealy pillowtop this weekend - Yates. First night's sleep was indescribable. Felt like I was sleeping in a cloud and back did not ache when I got up this morning. 5 years from now we will see - but it was worth it last night.

got my spring air back supporter at mattress firm in austin. when my apartment caught fire and my mattress was ruined, i had them special order the exact same thing for me - this mattress has saved my back immensely. i had surgery for a ruptured disc about four years ago, and hadn't had a truly comfortable night's sleep since then until i bought this mattress. now i wake up pain free and full rested every day. i sound like an info-mercial, but it's true!
