going on a short vacation south of Austin in a couple of weeks. gonna play golf Sat. morning, where should I play? I don't want to drive all over the damn place, so location is the most important factor. I'm staying near Kyle

thanks

The only one I've played down that way is The Bandit near New Braunfels a few years ago. I really like that course. I hear Plum Creek in Kyle is pretty decent as well.

I played Plum Creek a couple years ago. It was still under construction then, but open. I'd like to go back now. It's an interesting layout, lots of water, pseudo-links style course. I hope they've put in more rough, though. When I played some of the holes went from fairway to dirt to knee/waist high scrub. It was very easy to lose a ball then. If the wind is blowing above 10 mph you're gonna have a long day. But I think you can bring a cooler w/ your own beer. They didn't have a liquor license then (we were looking for a cart girl all day), but found out after the fact you could BYOB.

BTW, you wouldn't be staying at the Inn Above Onion Creek, would ya? My wife & I just honeymooned there last week. Fabulous place.

Ghost, yep, that's where we're staying. Been a few times and it is great. We've got some friends going also, so the golf is the dude's time while the women go to some wrought iron store or something equally stupid.

plum creek is likely the destination right now, unless I get a better idea.

The Bandit and Plum Creek are good. I know they have tournaments at Plum Creek so they must have worked on it.
Either way you can't go wrong, but call to see if there is any work being done first.

If you are in Kyle you are not all that far from Jimmy Clay and Roy Kizer, both are nice with Kizer having some awesome greens and fairways. Kizer is where they held the High School State tournament.
Coming from Kyle you take the William Cannon exit, go through the light and turn right at the next light which is Stassney.
You keep going on Stassney and once you get to the stop sign with the Sonic on the corner you are very close, maybe 3rd or 4th street to the right. There is alot of houses and apartments going up so you have to really look for the street and sign that says Jimmy Clay/Roy Kizer course.
Clay is cheaper, Kizer is nicer.
Hope this helps.

I really like The Bandit as well. The course is always in great shape and the price is hard to beat.

I'll be calling both the Bandit and Plum Creek tomorrow to see how they are in terms of flood damage, repair & maintenance, schedules, etc.

I really suck at golf, should that impact my decision?

As a fellow lousy golfer, I still had fun @ Plum Creek, though I'd like to try the Bandit some time (have heard very positive things about it). You can lose a lot of balls at Plum Creek. Tons of water, & if you hook/slice it into the tall stuff you're gonna have a tough time finding it. Plum Creek was not crowded at all, however, which was nice. And keep an eye on the weather forecast. If it's blowing you could really be in for a long day.

Ghost,

put me in a prairie with 2 inch water hazards and I'll still lose 9 balls. it don't matter, my damn ball is a water magnet.

I hear ya, bularry. Losing 'em in the water doesn't bother me that much, it's when I can't find the ball that I saw land & know exactly where it's at, only to get there & find it gone.

that is me, too. my dang brother in-law can slap a drive 250 yards away and 50 yards into the rough and find his ball in less than 3 minutes. I hit mine in the first cut of rough about 220 out and I can't find it. pisses me off.

The Bandit and Roy Kizer are far superior to Plum Creek. I wouldn't go there unless I had no choice. Just my opinion.

Hok em

I played the Bandit with our group July 28 and it was its usual great self for 16 holes. Number 12 has a tempory hole 182 yard out (poorly mowed fairway) and the green is destroyed. Too bad, because I liked that hole with its semi island green. Number 13 they are playing, but the green has also been destroyed by the floods and is in miserable condition. They aren't cutting any deals ($48.04 for fees and cart) but they are giving a sleeve of balls away with a tee time (pinnacles).

If you are staying in Kyle the better deal would be Plum Creek (due to the damage to The Bandit). Plum Creek was in great condition right before the floods and should be even better after all the rain. I agree Kiser would be a good choice, but you haven't got a snowballs chance in hell of getting a tee time on Saturdays unless you show up early Tuesday AM for the tee time dance or have speed dial and have a friend at Ma Bell to get you through.

gonna play Plum Creek, primarily due to the damage at BAndit and also the proximity to where I'm staying. Gotta finish the golf and get back to take the wives to lunch, probably at the Salt Lick.

Should be a dang good day - golf, bbq, lots of beer, swimming, massage, whirlpool bath with the wife, good dinner with lots of wine, sitting outside under a nighttime Texas sky visiting with friends.
