Man, that's a great album; every song is killer. I'd say Hoover Dam is my favorite. Dude has done so much for rock and roll over the past 25 years.
The follow up EP, Beaster, is also amazing.
I thought about going to the show but didn't. I've seen him many times, and, since his last few albums have fallen into the Bob Mould formula, I figured the show wouldn't have been anything I hadn't seen before.
Great album. It totally caught me by surprise -- I had at least 2 solo albums (were there more?) and then this driving pop/punk thing came out of nowhere.
I'm not a huge Husker Du fan. I don't really like much of his solo work. But man oh man, is "Copper Blue" one helluva record. Even the b-sides on the CD singles from that album are greatness.
What do y'all think about the new album? I've heard about 5 or 6 of the songs on his myspace page, and my thoughts ranged from unimpressed to disappointed. A couple of the songs were ok, but they were pretty much a rehash of what he was doing on the his 1995, self-titled album and 1998's Last Dog and Pony Show. And on songs such as Again and Again, it was almost embarassing that he was still bitterly singing about getting burned by an ex.
But back to the greatness that is Copper Blue, man oh man, a perfect distillation of later Husker Du and the Pixies into comparatively main-stream power pop. Another great album in this vein is Let Me Come Over by Buffalo Tom.
"Let Me Come Over" is one of my desert island discs, along with "It's a Shame About Ray" by the Lemonheads and "Girlfriend" by Matthew Sweet. Great pop with staying power. I probably wouldn't rate "Copper Blue" quite that high.
I bought a Bob Mould record a few years ago that showed some electronica influences. It didn't do much for me. Is his latest stuff like that?
I think you are insane to rate Girlfriend and Shame about Ray above Copper Blue (although I do love both those CD's), but you're friends with HookEm, so that would make sense.
I'm with JJazz on all 3. I think the Lemonheads catch a lot of crap because of Dando's personna at the time. BTW, where the **** is he these days? Seems that once he got straight, he hasn't done much.
Anyway, his song 'Rockin' Stroll' is really great. All from the point of view (literally) of a little kid being taking for a walk in his stroller.
JJ: I don't think his newest album has much electronica influences, but I listened to the album you are talking about and was turned off. I know he does a weekly dj party in dc and really digs electronica.
I saw the Lemonheads at Emo's about a year ago. Great ******* show. I know they played a few shows last week for SXSW and actually caught the tail end of one, from the street, at Emo's annex.
I would also recommend checking out the Reivers, an Austin band from the 80s/early 90s. They don't rock as hard as the other groups talked about in this thread but are well-crafted pop with great harmonies.
Yeah, that's true. WIsh I had made it to one of their reunion shows. My family has been passing around a virus for the better part of a month, and that weekend was my turn.
