Suburban Troubles

Anyone know of a good and honest chevy mechanic in Austin? My '95 suburban is starting to have a lot of issues, such as:

1. at 60+ mph, a loud, very low rumbling starts to occur
2. braking from high speeds causes significant vibrations
3. squeaking noise when I accellerate - the noise accellerates along with the car
4. a loud rattling noise from under the care when it's idling

Yi8kes! Sounds like you definitely might be having some major safety issues.

1) loud low rumbling- could be a tire horribly out of balance or something to do with your transmission. Loose U-Joint or other potential problem that coudllbe VERY bad if not attended to, but relatively inexpensive otherwise..
2) Vibrations from braking - probably just warped rotores, but could be something as severe as bad bearings (bearings MIGHT also be your loud noise which would be very bad)
3) sqeaking noise upon acceleration- sort of like a chirp? that riss and falls with speed NOT r.p.m. most likely your odometer cable is a little sticky
4) Loud rattling noise? could be a loose header at the manifold.

I don't know how honest these guys are but they have done me right before when I thought I was going to pay MUCH more. Mainly they will look at the car for free and let you know what they find. Dyer Automotive on North Lamar just north of 183 on the East side.

You might p.m. accuratehorn - his shop is mainly for foriegn cars but he is certainly from my experiance a very honest fellow and might have a better suggestion for you for a mechanic.

good luck

1 and 2 sounds like warped brake rotors and worn out ball joints/idler arms. My 97 Tahoe had the same problems. 3 and 4 not sure about, could be part of the worn out ball joints/idler arms or something totally different.

As far as a good mechanic, Dave's Ultimate Automotive, on Howard Lane near Dot's Place that burned down, has always been pretty good to me. He ain't the cheapest in town but he has always fixed the problems I brought him and others didn't appear as add on work he needed to do. He is pretty quick on the turnaround as well.
