Stupid weather (rain, lack of it)

The lack of rain in Austin is driving me nuts. The brief shower earlier today was just a tease, once again, the bulk of the rain is going to miss us. We've had this front, plus the two tropical systems in the last 2-3 weeks, and out of all that, I never even got enough rain to fully wet the pavement at my house. It's like Austin has a force field of high pressure over us that keeps all the rain away.

Agreed. There is some sort of phenomenon that surrounds Austin and makes storms fall apart. I have just stopped watching the weather for Austin all together. All the weathermen ALWAYS get it wrong and get so excited if there is any chance of rain and I'm tired of getting pissed off about it.

The Balcones Fault and Llano uplift create a tremendous verticle shear effect that rips the outflow boundaries of these weak storms to pieces. That's why these systems fall apart as they reach western Travis county and then reform east of Austin.

This afternoon there was a healthy-looking band of storms in Williamson Co., moving south towards Travis County, but it completely fell apart at the county line. (In spite of there being plenty of heat and humidity to sustain it.)

The most depressing (in terms of weather) summer of my entire life was spent in Austin. I think it was '94 - we went through the summer with something like 97 consecutive days without appreciable amounts of rainfall.

Vegetation turned brown and died. All creeks dried out replete with dead fish in the bottom. Lakes were seemingly half empty. The air conditioning in my car went out (compressor).

It sucked ***.

Since that summer, I do not curse rain - I hail it. The only exceptions being a tropical storm Allison situation where you get 40 inches of rain in 24 hours.

I had to go to a small shop in Burnet County on business today. We got pummeled with almost an hour's worth of torrential rain and even a bit of hail. We raced the storm back to Austin, but it died somewhere around Cedar Park. Arghhhhh.

Yeah it died in Cedar Park allright.

About 1/4 mile from my house in three directions.
I swear it rained west, north and east within one mile but there is an invisible dome over my house.

So I watered the **** out of yard last night.

Bumping this because it STILL hasn't rained significantly in NE Austin where I live. A few sprinkles, but not enough to fully wet the pavement. How is it that San Antonio, Corpus, Victoria, Dallas, etc get drenched but Austin gets almost nothing?

If I see another newscaster go on about how we are going to get 6 inches of rain, I'm going postal on live 6pm local news. They keep promising rain but we don't get sqat.

It has turned into Florida in the past week. Yesterday we got an inch and a half in about 20 minutes.

Prior to that downpour, I attempted to mow my back yard. I hadn't mowed it since May (?) letting it grow long to try to avoid a repeat of June's $160 water bill. I never realize how high the grass is until you actually mow it. I had 10-inch high St. Augustine in some places that was REALLY hell to mow because it was still wet.

Looked like a fuckin hurricane outside the office windows today and yesterday. Power almost went out a couple of times. Where is this **** coming from? And PLEASE tell me it won't be here Saturday for the game! I don't want another repeat of KSt last year!!

It shouldn't be. There is only a 20% or so chance of rain. The bad part about that is if it is the same setup as today and tomorrow, the hotter part of the day is when flare-ups occur the most. Then when the sun goes down the rain vanishes. It needs the solar heating effect.

Gustav or whatever the strong tropical storm soon to be a gaining strength hurricane could be coming to visit. It is forcast to be in the middle of the Gulf de Mexico as a Cat 3. It is too early to predict where it will go from there. We could be looking at a wet middle of the week next week.
