Stupid Rockets

Was just looking at the stats of Rudy Gay and was imagining Gay, Ming and McGrady. Frustrating, that is all.

Supposedly, Rockets weren't going to draft Gay if they hadn't drafted him for the Grizzlies in the Battier deal.

Gay isn't good enough to be a key contributor for a contending team. Anyone can pad stats on a **** team. Ask Mike James.

It was a great trade at the time because Battier was perfect for Van Gundy's offense. I still like the trade actually.

Rockets also unloaded a bad contract/player with this trade. That does count for something.

In hindsight it was a bad deal, but I'd say that pretty much then worst case scenario occurred (gay panned out, Battier's impact was a little underwhelming, and van gundy ended up getting fired), and it still isn't really that bad. so whatever.

It's easy for the casual fan to write this trade off...If you're just looking at points or rebounds. As its been mentioned before, Shane's "intangibles" don't always show up on the stat sheet.

The Rockets wanted Roy....he was gone. If they would have kept the pick they would have taken Thabo Sefolosha..

It's impossible to compare Gay to Battier. 2 different type of players.

Rudy Gay is having a good season, but that doesn't make the trade a bad one. Lots of players have good seasons. The Rockets thought they were one player away from a championship run and did not want to wait on a player. They felt Gay would take a year or two to blossom (they were right) and felt Battier would help them win right then.

They were wrong about the championship run but I would not put that on Battier. He is a great defender and plays his role perfectly. He does not fit into Adelmans system like he did Van Gundy's, but I still think the trade was a good one.

i give up.

well, i thought so too, but then it didn't seem to be registering too well. when we can get agreement that gay is a better player than battier and that the future of the rockets would be brighter with gay than battier (after just one year)...and still can't come to agreement that it was a stupid trade for the rockets...didn't seem like it was going anywhere.

for the record, i don't disagree with those that explain the trade as a result of the rockets being in "win now" mode and that battier fit van gundy's system.

the reason why i feel that the trade was stupid is, in part, due to management's gross miscalculation of the quality of the roster. that team was not one player (at least not a shane battier-type player) away from contention. making that trade thinking that you are is stupid.

I'm still not sure who you are arguing with. Again, most fans would take the trade back, but trades aren't made a year and a half after the fact, they are made at a point in time. Judging it at that point in time, there were more questions about Rudy Gay. At this point, he is playing well, but let's be honest, he's no where near a sure thing right now. He's playing well on the worst team in the league. Yes, worse than the T-Wolves. He's averaging 19 points and 6 rebounds as the first option on his team. Shane is at 8.5 and 5 as the third option and doing his job. The other stats are about equal. Don't get me wrong, Gay is the better prospect, and is the better scorer, but overall Shane does his job. If Gay was in the offense he'd be averaging about 13 a game. So he'd be better, but Shane is far superior on the defensive end which is what the Rockets need.

Why again is it a stupid trade?

Because:

1. The Rockets aren't very good right now, with Shane "doing his job".
2. They made this trade based off of a short-sighted, miscalculated view of their team and roster. McGrady's injury history is well documented. Counting on him for a full, All-Star level season was a bad gamble. Not understanding what type of team and players you have is, unfortunately, "stupid". It's certainly gotten people fired in the past.
3. They traded for the type of player that can maybe help a good team become better, but not the type that can help a mediocre team become good.
4. Their future is legitimately impacted towards the negative because Battier ain't getting better, while Gay has a ton of room to do so (and has shown that he's likely to get there).

You're free to disagree, but that's as clear as I can be.

When the rockets made that trade they were in all reality still a couple of years from being the elite of the west, they still had no PG/PF. By the time they finally added those pieces(this year) Gay would have easily developed into a better offensive player than Gay(as he has done) and with Gundy he would have improved his defense. A stupid trade no matter how you look at it, and if they thought they were going to get Roy they look even dumber.

I would love to see Rudy Gay on this team, but at the time, and to this day, I think it was a good trade for the Rockets, and gave them a much better chance at competing for a championship last season and this season. The window is not going to be open for long for this Rockets team, so getting a rookie who had trouble competing in college wasn't the ideal choice. And even though this whole issue is a non-issue since the Rockets wouldn't have drafted Gay even if they had the pick, allow me a second to vent here.

With how often McGrady and Yao touch the ball, and the type of offense we run, there is no guarantee he scores and plays for us like he does for a team that demands he touch the ball A LOT.

if you're asking me, right now assuming he would come in and play like he has for them with us, I still take a proven veteran and classy leader in Battier without question. he is our Bruce Bowen, without all the cheap shots and spitting
