Student fees to pay for prayer?

They're going to have to give the same support to every religious group that applies. That's a really bad idea. At a school that size, there could be 100 groups with some sort of religious affiliation. Oops.

probably amounts to giving money to any student group that applies whether they are religious or not. If they give to every student group then why should they not a group just because it is religious?

First, I wonder about the wisdom of an institution that collects student fees so that it can redistribute a portion of those fees to the very students who pay the fees in the first place. I'd prefer the University discontinue the fee, if it's only purpose is to redirect it to student groups.

Second, let's remember that it's a "student fee". And it would hardly seem fair if all students (both religious and non-religious) are forced to pay the fee, but only some student groups (the non-religious) are treated as beneficiaries.

It would be like saying that religious people aren't eligible to receive welfare because it's public money. Paying out welfare to a religious person hardly constitutes "an establishment of religion." And paying out student fees to a Catholic group, which is treated on the basis of complete parity with other student groups, no matter the inanity of their purpose, hardly seems objectionable, except perhaps to the person who reserves in his heart some special reason to despise religion.

Perhaps religious students could be given the option of not paying the student fee if they're to be excluded from its benefits. Come to think of it, perhaps all students could be given that option.

And is the religious welfare recipient prohibited from preaching in the street? Or is his welfare check made contingent upon him ceasing all such activities?

And so you propose to deny basic property rights to welfare recipients?

That's not going to help you with the welfare recipient.

so how do you know that it is the money the university gave versus money that was raised independently? I think the solution is that the university shouldn't be giving money to student organizations of any type.

[qroup]I think the solution is that they shouldn't be charging fees in the first place, if the only purpose is to redistribute it to the groups.

The University of Wisconsin has to allocate student services fees to support religious activities? Coelacanth may be surprised to learn that this bothers me. Why should fees collected from all students be used to support the religious activities of one denomination? Why, especially, should student fees at a state university be used to support proselytizing? Doesn't seem kosher.

Take UT as an example. There are hundreds of groups that receive funds from student fees. Too many to even post and i got tired of reading after the letter A. Frankly, imo, its bs. As a student at the university, i shouldnt have to pay for other groups to receive money. They should fund themselves through dues, charity drives, etc. It used to piss me off in the early 90's when my student fees would go up every year. they had a fraction of the groups that they do now. the educators argue that it is for the benefit of diversity which is all bs anyway because nobody is going to join the lebanese social club unless they are lebanese and nobody is going to join the gay and lesbian club unless they are gay or lesbian. and yes, there are multiple religious groups at the university thjat receive student fee money.
