in dallas, the loon is well known for the strength of their drinks. what places in austin have the same reputation?

particularly margaritas and the like.

baby a's - purple margaritas
matt's el rancho - margaritas
trudy's - mexican martinis
club deville - mixed drinks

Puffer,
That is an excellent list.

It usually only takes me 1 Long Island from Club Deville to get me... well... you know.

And I'm sure we all have our Trudy's Mexican Martini stories...

The Red Rocket at the Cloak Room used to be the what I considered the strongest in town, but they seem to have gotten weaker nowadays. I think they got in trouble with TABC a while back...

Oh, and Baby A's was the place to go freshman year when you got your first ****** fake ID. Good times.

I forgot: the Magnum at the Texas Chili Parlor is a stout drink as well. When I worked at the Capitol as a runner we'd hit up the Cloak Room and them stumble on to TCP. God I miss Austin.

Food is hit or miss, but Antonio's margs are pretty freakin' strong. A couple of those will get you pretty far into the bag.

okay, let me flip the question a bit. how about, what are the strongest drinks in the South Congress/Barton Creek area? that is where i prefer to spend most of my time in austin.

puffer's list is solid but i have to say the mex mart's at trudy's seem to have steadily grown weaker since (maybe before but at least) 1999-2000ish. they don't need a 2 limit on them anymore.

Surprised no one has mentioned Cedar Door's Mexican Martinis. Although I do think they've gotten a little weaker over the years.

Nuevo Leon has some seriously strong margs. I swear to God the last time I was there I had to ask for more mix because it was almost straight tequila.

Cedar Door may have claimed to have invented the mexican martini, but they make an underwhelming version of it. Trudy's has pretty much set the standard.

I know it's been a number of years, but Tropical Isle's Hand Grenade or Shark Attack. "Get out of the water!" and those plastic hand grenades flying around the bar. Good times.

Those Tropical Isle drinks bring back memories. Generally, I find the "whiskey bentley" to be the strongest drink in town. It's four parts whiskey and one part glass.

Pretty sure Trudy's limits you to two Mexican Martinis. In fact, i think one time, i ordered one, then ordered a beer next, and then tried to go back to a second Mexican Martini and was denied.

Although i think you can order two and then switch to beer. Just not alternating. I don't know, having two pretty much kicks my *** these days.
