Strong Recruiting Angle

One of the factors that contributed to Charlie Strong’s decision to demote Shawn Watson was recruiting related.

Strong believes the easiest way for Texas to land elite recruits in Texas is by winning games. Texas is rebuilding, and many kids want to play for a winning program. Strong and his staff told recruits to expect a much different team against Notre Dame.

Unfortunately, for Strong and his staff, Texas showed signs of regression against Notre Dame.

Texas freshman linebacker Malik Jefferson is one of the few positive stories this year. I asked Jefferson the best way to pitch Texas to elite recruits, especially considering he was a 5-star recruit last year. Jefferson’s answer displays why he is emerging into a team leader.

“Potential,” Jefferson said. “You can’t run away from something that is going to be great in the next couple of years.”

Jefferson explained why he is so convinced Texas will be great.

“Because of my class,” Jefferson said. “I don’t speak highly of myself, or the kids from my class, but there’s something special about us. The meetings we have. The talks that we have. The relationships that we’ve built throughout the whole process was great. It could be this year, it doesn’t matter, we’re going to be great. Eventually, it’s going to start one day.”
