Stop a dog from digging?

Is this possible? We have a one year old dachshund that loves to dig his way out of the backyard. He even has a hold for the neighbors backyard. It's weird because he gets out plays for a while and comes to the front door to be let back in. I'm just worried he'll get run over. What do you guys do?

does he dig in the same spot everytime?

If so you can put chicken wire over the hole and then cover it or fill the hole with doggy doo doo.

Our lab did the same thing to a particular spot and we tried all the "no dig" sprays and granules but they didn't work. What finally did work was lacing the new dirt heavily with cayenne pepper. He came snorting and sneezing into the house and hasn't dug that spot since. If he digs all over the place, this will be difficult.

I dug a trench around the entire perimeter of my fence and put chicken wire about 1 foot down into the ground. They dug for a while but finally gave up. That might have been the most manual labor I've ever done.

Dachshund's are one of the three most digging-est dogs in the world. Beagles and Bassetts are the other two.

I have two beagles and a dachshund.....

******* shoot that sorry *** mutt in the skull and kick his...oh, my bad, we only advise that for every animal other than dogs on this board...

how many ******* times are you going to cut and paste that response to a "help with me with my pet" thread?

Our trainer told us that dogs have scent glands on their paws so as they dig, they are smelling with their paws... So stick revolting stuff that they don't like down in there. He suggested, as suggested in this thread, his/her own crap is the best solution. Others are peppers (any kind of jalepeno or even in the powder form as suggested earlier) or stick a giant rock in the hole.

Our German Shep gave up on his favorite hole after we put a rock in it... He ate the jalepenos though.

He has several holes that we have put rocks or bricks in to stop him for now. I think we're going to try the least labor intensive first and put pepper.

I can't believe that there have been 13 posts and yet no one has given the correct answer:QUESTION: How do you stop a dog from digging?

Answer:
Take away his shovel.
