I've been there for work a couple of times now. Haven't had the oportunity to spend many days walking around, but we had a Sunday and we've eaten at a couple of nice places for work.
In Gamla Stan (old town) there are a couple of great restaurants.
Fem Sma Hus - "5 small houses" Phenomenal meal, underground cavernous type place. Easily the best meal we've eaten there
Den Gylden Freden - a block away from the sma hus, great meal, cozy ambiance, very cool
The Grand hotel - Best smorgasboord in town. They only serve it on certain nights so make sure you ask. Not in Old town, but right there.
Places to go
Best Museuem is VassaMuseet. The fact that the #1 tourist attraction in Sweden is a testament to their biggest naval failure is ironic on so many levels.
The National Gallery next to the Grand Hotel was good too. You can get in and out fairly quickly and has some good nordic, and european art.
If you're going to be there soon, make sure you take some kind of boat tour. Stockholm by boat is a great site. It is a very pretty city, but I'm not enough of an expert to give the insider's view into what's good there.
Great tips. Thank you. I will be in Sweden for a week in June, but I will be up north in a small town called Leksand for a few days and down south in a town called Linkoping. I have a day and a half in Stockholm over a weekend.
Looking forward to those long scandinavian summer days. I think sun set is after 10pm and sun rise is around 3:30am in June.
