Baylor head baseball coach Steve Smith, who had interviewed for coaching spots at Auburn and Mississippi State, announced today he was no longer looking at those schools.
“After much prayer and deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my name from consideration for the jobs both at Auburn and Mississippi State,” Smith said in a statement. “I appreciate their interest and wish both programs nothing but the best. My family and I appreciate very much the outpouring of support we have received from fans and friends. I look forward to continuing our work at Baylor University and I am very excited about the future here.”
Smith has most of its starting lineup and pitchers — who were mostly sophomores — returning from this year’s squad, which went 32-26 but didn’t make an NCAA regional for the second time in the last 11 seasons.
