Steve McMichael

Long overdue. He addressed some HS kids for me back in 92/93 in the weight room of Neuhaus Royal. "I was always too small. too slow, but 13 years in the NFL because of that man (Dana LeDuc) right there"'

I have seem them all over the last 55 years:

Bomar going down
Westbrook on ND
Brackens on the Tech kicker
Marcus Dupree's last play in college football when Richard Peavy broke both their helmets
The opening kickoff against Arkansas when Leiding did his best imitation of Scott Hill vs Tony Dorsett

But the hardest hit I've ever seen by a Longhorn was when our PK injured prior to A&M game and Fred worked with Steve to do kickoffs. Our regular kicker was lazy and never ran down field, never tried to make a tackle. A&M did not assign anyone to block the kicker. Steve had a 40 plus yard head of steam as Curtis Dickey brought the ball out toward the Aggie sideline, where he met upclose & personal with all 275 pounds of Mr McMichael. The collision sent Dickey into the wall about the 25 yardline. According to friends that were on that Aggie team, Curtis got up and refused to go to the huddle. A good friend of mine was an OL, who went to the bench with another Aggie OL and "persuaded" Curtis to go out to the huddle.

For those that didn't know Curtis, he was about 6'2"/220 pounds and was a world class sprinter. How fast? He defeated Carl Lewis in a heads up 100 yard dash in an NCAA meet.

Congrats and well deserved! I recall that DKR recruited him as a tight end . He and his high school teammate Bill Ackerman were unmovable in the middle of the D- line.

Who would have thought two guys from Freer would become stars at Texas not to mention Bill’s brother Jim who pitched for the Horns and later pitched for the Atlanta Braves.

Bam Bam rubbed off on everyone he was around. He redefined toughness, people saw it and got better. That’s why Acker and the 85 Bears got so tough. He had impact like a Ray Lewis.
Ditka said he was the toughest dude he coached. I hate to see him wasted away now.

My mother, cousin & best friend all died of ALS. I f**king HATE that disease. Apparently Steve has endured it with grace & with the tenacity with which he played the game. Congratulations, Steve. Well deserved.

^^^ Agree.

Horrible disease!! A longtime friend of mine (and my boss at 3 different companies) got ALS early
Jan. 2020 and died quickly in July.

He was 1 of several deaths that rocked my world that year.

Breaking: Steve has been hospitalized with MRSA which complicates the ALS. Family is requesting prayers.

Creek,

Obviously I haven't talked to him or Misty, but I have wondered if he is fighting until he got voted into the HOF and then until the August induction ceremony. He's a really strong human being.
