Sad to see a visionary like this die so young. F cancer.

I think I've bought every gadget they developed!

RIP Steve Jobs. He was the tech visionary of my generation and applied it to change the world. No telling what the world will miss out on with him gone. He will be missed.

A great business man and by all accounts a good person as well. It's always sad to see someone go, but a cessation of the suffering is something to be thankful for. RIP.

He combined artistry with functionality. We never have enough creative genius at work in this country, particularly within someone who had courage and business acumen in spades. I'm one who thinks most CEOs are overcompensated managers doing work that could be competently undertaken by any good $1 million a year manage. If they just shuffle wealth around and keep a good thing going they aren't worth a salary that makes a difference in the balance sheet. Jobs is on the of the exceptions. His vision led to creation of enormous wealth through delivery of exceptional value. He didn't just stay ahead of the copycats, he consistently outclassed them.

Agreed Crockett. I think Jobs was a once-in-a-generation talent. Not only did he have the vision to see where things could go, but he had built an organization with first-rate engineering, design, marketing and operations ability so he could execute on the vision and deliver innovation on a mass scale. This is a rare combination of skill and something we need more of.

I was introduced to the Mac when I was at UT in 1988, bought my first one in 1990 and have never looked back. For selfish reasons I would like to have seen what Apple under Jobs could have done over the next 10-20 years.

Whether someone likes Apple products or not, there’s no denying that they have raised the bar for what consumer tech can deliver, and that’s a good thing for everyone involved. Nobody but Apple would have done the iPhone, and now everybody is on that bandwagon. Same for the iPad. These things seem obvious to everyone now, but nobody else had the balls or the talent to do it first.

Really? This guy invented nothing!!! He took things already in placed and improved their functionality, nothing more than that, why is so illuminating?

Hell, he got all of his ideas from Gene Rodenberry from Star Trek!!!!

Even if that is true it diminishes not one iota the incredible vision and implementation wrought by Mr. Jobs.

If his contributions are as slight as you seem to imply then why haven't others lept into the fray, if not void?

IBM, Microsoft, etc.: THINK.

Steve Jobs and Apple: THINK BETTER.

He revolutionized how we conceptualized technology and put his revolution in your hands.

Also a prick and a bully at times according to the article. Nonetheless I consider him a great man, despite his flaws. He certainly influenced through his products my life.

Didn't he start the "I worked 140 hours last week and all I got was this lousy t-shirt" game back in the late 80s?

Visionary or not, he surrounded himself with people who would basically die for his ideas. That gave him a lot more leeway when he returned to Apple. He did a good job of forcing the company to toe the line behind the "real" talent... engineers and designers.

He invented the GUI,for practical use, which revolutionized everyman computing.

I'll fight you if you disagree.

If you want an intellectual property thief, look no further than bill gates.

I have seen comments attributed to Bill Gates saying this or that at Apple was a crappie product..

If true he should know. He became a billionaire a bunch of times over from ripping off the really good ones.

What a douche. At least Jobs was original. Gates is the techno nerd that has to steal from the good ones to get ahead.

There are lots of labels that have been applied to Jobs. I don't know which ones really fit but the powerful thing that he did, in my opinion, is bring a clear vision for how technology could be — excellence in software and hardware engineering, industrial design, integration, ease of use — and then built an organization of very talented people and drove them to execute on the vision.

This is a monumental task, and the list of individuals who have ever done something similar would be a very short one.
