Steakhouse recommendation?

Okay, you red meat lovers. I need to find a good steakhouse in Austin. Which do y'all think is the best one? I've checked some online reviews and came up with these...

Austin Land & Cattle Co.
Fleming's
Ruth's Chris
Sullivan's

I haven't been to these places, so I'm looking for feedback (good/bad/ugly) on them or other recommendations. They all seem really pricey, but I guess that's to be expected at a steakhouse?

you will get some varying degree of opinion with those suggestions, however trust me on this....

all 4 of those places will do you right.

A few things to consider with each:

If you're looking for more of a local feel and would like to support a local busines....Austin Land and Cattle

If you are looking for some excellent wine choices along with your dinner....Flemings

If you're looking for the upscale feel with solid grub...Ruth's Chris or Sullivans

you'll probably get 20 different answers, but for me it goes:

1. Austin Land and Cattle (excellent steaks and great date atmosphere)
2. Trulucks (not on your list, but their filet topped with shrimp and crab is awesome)
3. Ruth's Chris
4. Sullivans

I've yet to go to Flemings. Damn, I'm hungry now.

agreed that Trulucks is also a solid choice. Not my first choice of the previous 4 in regards to steaks (they have excellent seafood), however I was pleasantly surprised with their filet.

LadyLonghorn, unpaintedhuffhines knows what he's talkin' about. Great comments to distinguish between the different steakhouses.

My personal favorite is AL&C. Muted lighting provides cozy, comfortable atmosphere, steaks are most flavorful in town (bone-in ribeye can't be beat!) and are priced better than the upscale chains. Service is warm and friendly. Start with the Shiner Bock battered mushrooms--yummmm!

I'm not a fan of Sullivan's; I find their steaks to be a little dry and bland--and therefore overpriced. I'd go with Fleming's if you want upscale and they do
have a great wine list. I've yet to try Ruth's Chris.

Fleming's is easily your best choice.....

Saying that makes me recognize Austin needs a great independent steak house.....AL&C is only good given the competition...

you know what... it really does need a local steakhouse. And considering that there are great places to buy beef locally, such as that kobe-angus hybred place, it seems like a no-brainer. Hmmm.... All of those places seem to do well, right?

I'm serious, btw. If some of you want to go in on it, I have someone who can run it and we can all do really well. I think we'd need like 4 investors with about 50-100K each. I'll mention it to the guy tomorrow. No, I have not been drinking.

I like Fleming's much more than Sullivan's. The steaks are better, the sides are WAY better, the wine list is better, and the atmosphere is much nicer.

Haven't been to Ruth's Chris since they were on Guadalupe, so I can't comment. Haven't been to AL&CC, but I plan to.

Somebody mentioned TX Land & Cattle Co, and I'd like to chime in as well. It's hardly upscale, but I've had several "choice" ribeyes there that top prime ribeyes elsewhere. It's far and away better than other similarly priced mid-level steakhouses, like Saltgrass, etc.

My opinions only . . .

oh what the hell would you know? You order steak well done.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I've made reservations at Austin Land & Cattle Co., so I'll report back and let y'all know how it was.

And as to Texas Land & Cattle Co., the one and only time I've been there (IH35 & 290 location) roaches were crawling on the walls. Nice.

Believe it or not, New Braunfels has an awesome little steakhouse! It is called Myron's and is right off of the square or circle, or whatever the hell that is. It is in an old remodeled movie theatre. I think the owner used to be a GM at Ruth's Chris in Austin or something. It is just as good as Ruth's Chris or Flemings, and also kind of has their atmosphere, but with a neat small town touch

Royers' Cafe in Round Top has an awesome filet if you want to have a different experience. Its about an hour away.

I was not that impressed with AL&C - steaks were not all that. Flemings would be my choice.

We had a great dinner at AL&CC! My friends loved their New York strip steaks. And my filet mignon was outstanding. The service was good and the sides were tasty, as were the Shiner Bock battered jumbo shrimp. Y'all definitely had the ambience down...it was just as you described.

Considering all the responses, I'll definitely have to try Fleming's next time! I've heard good things about the steakhouse in NB, and I love Royer's...been too long since I've been there though!

Not a steak house, but the best cut of meat I have had in Austin were the tenderloins served at Gumbos.

I believe they serve three of them with different toppings.

Astonishingly good food.

I would agree with Flemmings as the best Steak house type resuraunt I have been to here.

I think the steaks at Fleming's and Sullivans are great. If you want prime rib you should go to Truluck's. They hickory smoke it and it really is a fantastic piece of meat. Their steaks are good as well, but the prime rib is king there.

have any of you ever been to Ray's Steakhouse on Guadalupe? it's a locally owned place, I believe. I had a really great meal there last time I went, about a year ago.
