Does the Statesman ruin games for anyone else?
I like the Statesman's Longhorn-related e-mail service, but it kills me when I have the game Tivo'd and I get an e-mail from them with the score or outcome in the subject line. I worked till 9:30 last night and wanted to watch the game, but my work requires that I monitor my blackberry.
I never open e-mails from people who might e-mail about the game when I'm watching a game on Tivo, but the subject line gives away the ending of the Statesman's e-mail. Seems to me that the Statesman could achieve the same effect with an innocuous subject line like "Texas-OSU Box Score" - I e-mailed the Statesman with what I thought was a reasonable suggestion to that effect, but they seemed to disagree. Not as much of a problem for me with Saturday games, but during the week I often have to work late and pretty much have to monitor my blackberry.
Anyway, if anyone else has the same problem, perhaps a few more e-mails to the statesman would help.

Nathan,
Mark Rosner forwarded me your note to him regarding the posting of UT basketball scores on those e-mail blasts.
I'm sorry, but I don't see that changing. Because we are in the era of Blackberrys -- and the Internet, and ESPN -- we as a news organization are in a daily and nightly battle to get our information out as soon as possible. That includes giving readers that score.
We do it not because we want to ruin anyone's DVR enjoyment, but because the majority of fans who aren't able to watch it live or on TV want to know.
I understand your point, though. Yours is the first e-mail that I remember seeing with this type of request, but I am sure there are others out there like you.
Sorry about future spoiler alerts, but we've got to get that news out there as soon as we can.
Thanks for taking the time to write us. I do appreciate it.
Sincerely,

Subject: statesman e-mails with scores in the subject line
Mark,
I enjoy receiving the Stateman's e-mail updates after each game, but in this era of Tivo and Blackberrys, I have experienced some Statesman e-mails that were unfortunately too prompt. I, like a lot of people, often have to watch games (especially weeknight basketball games) on delay with my DVR. When the Statesman e-mails the box score immediately at the end of the game, the Statesman usually includes the in subject line the score of the game. If we the readers haven't gotten to the end of the game on our DVRs and happen to see the subject line of the e-mail, obviously it creates problems.
I would think for the post-game e-mail, the e-mails perhaps could have a more-limited subject line such as 'Kansas v Texas Box Score,' and then anyone who does not want to see the score would know not to open the e-mail. When the score is in the subject line, though, the damage is done when a person looks at his or her Blackberry. As much as I try to ignore the Blackberry during games, my job requires me to keep up with e-mail fairly regularly, and I think a lot of other people have the same issue.
Just a thought.
Thanks,
Nate
