Right now we lead the Aggies 8.5 to 4. We are in good shape but the points are still going to be hard to come by. We need to get 10 points to win it. We are doing much better than last year. There are several factors that come into considering. Last year we lost 10.5 to 8.5. One thing that hurt us is we lost the football point but fortunately we got it this year. Also the real killer was that we only got 2 out of 10 of the womens points last year while now we got 5 of the points which is great. Some of the big factors in the women's point is that our soccer team tied the Aggies and split that point and our Women got the Swimming and Diving and Cross Country points and 0.5 for softball. These were points we didn't get last year. Much improvement indeed.
There is one negative in that last year the Aggies got 4 out of 6 of the track and field points and it looks like they are going to get them this year. The big disappointment is for the first time in years the Aggies got the Men's Cross Country point.

The next competition is at College Station on 4-18-09 in Men's Tennis starting at 6 P.M. Those that can please go support the Horns in this match because I think it will be hard fought. We should win but the Aggies will be tough at CS. I am also hopeful that on 4-27 to 4-29 in Men's Golf that we will get that point and thus have the competition won for the year.
It would be great if our softball team can beat the Aggies in Austin on May 2 but that may be too much to hope for as far as a sweep even though if they continue to play like they have been playing we could get it.
Unfortunately baseball is up for grabs this year from what I have seen so far and it is probable that the Aggies will get both Track and Field Outdoor points.
We will see. Let's support our Horns and get that overall trophy back to Austin.
I feel that we will at worse get a tie for it but then the Aggies retain it with the tie breaker so we need to get to that magic 10 points which is not going to be easy.
I look forward FWHORN's comments and analysis.

Bill, you pretty much have it down. I have a hard time seeing us getting either of the outdoor Track and Field Points or the Women's golf point. While the ladies did a fantastic job pulling off the upset in College Station, it is hard to see them beating aggy twice in softball so that is another lost half point. That takes it to 8 1/2 to 7 1/2. Texas is favored in both men's tennis and men's golf but upsets can happen and baseball is a tossup given Texas' offensive woes. Win tennis and golf and Texas takes back the trophy lose either and it probably falls to baseball which is the great unknown, lose both and the aggies likely retain the trophy. I like where we are at but it is far from over.

Bill, I have not made it a secret I could care less about the Lone Star Showdown other than to just shut aggy up since they finally managed to eek out a year where they win the thing. But I have to admit your amazing tenacity in enjoying this competition piques my interest to the point that I do hope we win this.

Not because I give a damn about bragging rights as we have nothing to prove to lowly aggy and all that is aggy. No, I want to win because I want your work in keeping tally and interest in this rewarded. THAT will make me happy. So let's go win this, Longhorns. Win it not for the Gipper, win it for Cowboy Bill in Sinton.

Thank you 100p. And I understand and agree with you we don't have anything to prove but I still of course hope we win the competition but not that I wouldn't take an NC or great playoff run for it. But I understand that this competition isn't everyone's interest and am cool with that.

Hey FWHORN I think the Women's Golf team might also take the point. I would still favor the Aggies but I think if we play well and do our best that our Ladies have a shot at it (no pun intended). I checked the score of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Tournament held a few weeks ago and we got ninth place just behind the Aggies and we only lost to them by one stroke which is as close as you can get. It would be great to get this point. We will see.

The weird thing about this contest is track and field is basically worth 6 points. Between M & W cross country, M & W indoow and M & W outdoor, that is more points than football, baseball and basketball combined.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if aggy threw all their development into CC and T/F just to win this contest.

Right you are Scooter and I agree with everything you say. If they could get all six of those points then they would only need 4 points of the remaining 13 points to win the competition.
I think each of the track and field events should be divided by one point for the Men's teams and one for the women's team. For example whoevers win two or three of Men's Indoor Track and Field, Men's Outdoor Track and Field and Men Cross Country gets one point and same for the Women's side.
That way Track and Field wouldn't hold almost 2/3 of the 19 available points. Of course State Farm would not consider this ridiculous suggestion.

Fortunately even though they have been getting the majority of those points we have still managed to get a couple of them every year but they really do seem to be working on their track and field teams.

Also Scooter I once emailed State Farm and said that whoever wins football should get 1/4 of a point if both teams wind up with a tie at 9 1/2 points each at the end of the competition because that way we would have a clear winner than one retain it whoever had won the year before. I choose football because it is the most obvious popular sport and also because the women's events outnumber the men's event in the competition 10 to 9. Needless to say State Farm didn't even consider my suggestion worth responding to.

Womens golf is down 27 strokes after two days and is a virtual impossibility to come back so another point for aggy today. Mens golf gets going on Monday and is absolutely crucial.

There was a point where TEXAS used to win the majority of the points in track and cross country and we didn't complain back then.

Belmont should have seen this coming when A&M hired Pat Henry away from LSU.

We still have a chance, but let's not whine about A&M winning all the track points because we used to be in that situation before.

Cuernos is right but even when we dominated the sports I felt that they had too many points allocated to track and field sports and not enough to football which has the biggest fan base by far. But I really hoped that our Ladies' golf team had a chance to beat the Aggies since they were so close in a prior tournament losing by only 1 point. Hopefully our men's golf team will take the point this week. We will see.

Men's golf Big 12 Championship. Texas trails aTm by two strokes after 18. They will play another 18 today and then 18 tomorrow and 18 on Wednesday.

Fight Texas, Fight!!

Texas in the tank in the second opening day round. While UT has completed more holes, they now trail the Aggies by 11. Bogies equal to pars on the first 9 and birdies essentially nonexistant. This doesn't look good for the State Farm point.

Forget about A&M.....they have decent athletes and for the most part they have done an excellent job in all sports for the past few years........

We are losing to KSU, KU, CU.......in golf???? REALLY??????

We still have a chance to win the trophy, but our last hope is going to be baseball.......and if KU an KSU can sweep us (yes, i said sweep because KSU should have swept us)....A&M can do the same.

What a pathetic show for TEXAS athletics. Unbelieveable.

Down 23 shots after two rounds it is looking bad for the mens golf team. Even if we win the baseball point we still need a half point or morw in three sports where we will be huge underdogs.

Looks like aggy may complete the huge comeback and this time it is the mens sports that let us down.

Right you are FWHORN. That was a major surprise to me. I was really counting on our Men's Tennis and Golf to get us over the 9.5 margin but it looks like we will be lucky to get a tie.

This is a disappointing showing by our golf team as far as the State Farm competition goes. Hopefully with the new facilities we can attract some good recruits for both our men and women's team. Still disappointing effort by both teams.

Texas trails the Aggies by 33 after three rounds with 18 holes to play.

Worse than that the team stands 11th out of 12 teams and a Texas player is 59th out of 60 total players in the tournament.

Whoever ranked Texas as 20 in the nation needs to get another job,

This is just sad.

What is most disappointing is that if this competition had been in place for the last 100 years Texas would have won it 99 of those years with the exception of last year and now it looks more and more like it will be lost again this year. What was once complete dominance on an Athletic Department wide scale is now tough competition in all but a few sports. Have to give $Bill credit he has definitely raised the overall level of the aggy athletics. I know football is the one we all care about the most but if they keep score in it I want to beat A&M in it and what was once a given in so many sports is now not so much.

To win this trophy........beating the aggies in softball is A MUST!!!!!!! If Connie is really a good coach, she better have the team prepared to win this game at home. The aggies are not that great this year and they do not have the pitching they had with Scarbourough and Gibson.

We take this 1/2 point and then we need 1 out of 3 from baseball, women's and men's track.

Women will go to aggy. Baseball is really iffy and we can just hope we shock the aggy men's track team again. It will be tough this time.
