Adam Richman on Man vs Food last night went to the State Fair of California and they had some awesome looking things.
3 Twinkies on a stick dipped in a sweet pancake batter then deep fried, topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Amongst several other deep fried items, many of which I've seen in Dallas and some not, but like the twinkies it had a little different twist.
What got me salivating was a tornado potato (a whole potato cut into one giant curly fry) wrapped around a foot long dog/sausage and then deep fried (no batter) and topped with chilli and cheese. If they have this in Dallas please tell me as I'll walk the whole damn fair to get it.
Here is what we tried (in a group, so just a bite or so each and then moved on):
Corn Dog: Absolutely perfect. The standard
Fried Frito Pie (Best Taste winner 2010): Excellent. Really tasted like frito pie, came with a little tube of sour cream, which was a great touch. We did not ruin it with the cheap salsa that was also included.
Fried Butter (Most Creative winner 2009). Terrible, tasted like a bad fried biscuit. We threw a lot of the order away after a small bite each.
Fried Coke (Most Creative winner 2006). Meh. Like a fried roll with coke syrup. It would have been worse, but we got it with the fried butter and it was much better than that.
Fried S’more Pop Tart. Every good. Crunchy fried pop tart with melted filling inside. Too much whipped cream and syrup on top. If there is a next time, I am getting it without the toppings.
Fried Twinkie: Excellent. Best sweet of the day. The only thing we wanted to order again (but didn’t).
Beer in a plastic up. Winner. Best in Show. Gold medal.
