Starting a website

I'm semi-technically aware, but have no clue about building websites or managing them. Can someone point me in the right direction? Should I go through yahoo or a service like that? Or just buy a domain name and go at it? Any help would be appreciated!!

You'll need a domain name and a place to host your site. Most hosting companies will register your domain for you, but I would recommend going through GoDaddy because they are cheap and have good service.

As for hosting companies, I have been a customer of Globat for over two years and have been generally pleased with their service. 2GB storage, 60GB bandwidth, more e-mail addresses than I'll ever need, all for about $8/month. The only downside is that I can't edit my server's configuration files if I want to, but you probably won't ever have a need for that if you are "semi"-technically aware.

make sure no matter what you register a .com domain name then you should consider registering a .org make sure that what ever you register relates highly to what your marketing so that it will be picked up effectivly by the search engines... A good cheap domain to register later on is .ws or global domains they have a good mlm format even if you don't use the address yourself.

pmg,

No, and that sucks too. I think they do give SSH for an extra fee, but I've never been willing to pay for it.

I am looking for a new host. I use addr.com but have had some troubles with them lately. I have read good things about Lunar Pages, I Power, and IX Web Hosting. Will look at go daddy also, but anyone have any good or bad experiences with any of the above?
