HOW MANY STARTERS WILL WE LOSE.

HOW MANY NEW PITCHERS DO WE GET.

THIS IS COMPLETE GUESSWORK BECAUSE THE DRAFT IS SO UNPREDICTABLE, BUT HERE GOES:

PLAYERS LIKELY TO GET DRAFTED AND LEAVE AND/OR NEVER GET TO AUSTIN
JORDAN DANKS
KYLE RUSSELL
BRANDON BELT
KENN KASPAREK
ROBBIE GROSSMAN
TAYLOR JUNGMANN
- OF NOTE: I AM COMLPETELY OUT OF THE LOOP ON THE HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS AND THE DRAFT THIS YEAR. MY ASSESSMENT OF GROSSMAN AND JUNGMANN IS BASED ON WHERE THEY WERE IN THE FALL. I SAW JUNGMANN THROW A PLAYOFF GAME TWO WEEKS AGO, AND HE WAS DOMINATING. HE’S EVERY BIT OF 6’7”, HIS FASTBALLWAS CONSISTENTLY 92-94, AND HE WAS SHOVING AGAINST A VERY GOOD OFFENSIVE TEAM. GROSSMAN IS A POTENTIAL 5-TOOL PRO, AND HE SWITCH HITS.

UNSURE
PRESTON CLARK HAD QUESTIONABLE KNEES BEFORE HE BLEW HIS OUT ON THE FIELD YESTERDAY. WHAT THAT DOES TO HIS DRAFT STOCK REMAINS TO BE SEEN.

NOT SURE WHAT THE DOPE IS ON MCCRORY AFTER THIS SEASON, BUT HE IS DRAFTABLE AND AN EXCEPTIONAL ATHLETE WITH PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL TOOLS.

RETURNING PITCHERS TO BE EXCITED ABOUT
AUSTIN WOOD
CHANCE RUFFIN
RILEY BOENING
COLE GREEN
STAYTON THOMAS
BRANDON WORKMAN
HUNTER HARRIS
KEITH SHINABERRY

RETURNING POSITION PLAYERS TO BE EXCITED ABOUT
RUSSELL MOLDENHAUER
CAMERON RUPP
TRAVIS TUCKER
DAVID HERNANDEZ
MICHAEL TORRES
TANT SHEPHERD
RUNEY DAVIS
CONNOR ROWE
KEVIN KEYES
KYLE LUSSON

INCOMING FRESHMEN TO BE EXCITED ABOUT
AUSTIN DICHARRY, RHP, KLEIN COLLINS (NOT SURE WHAT KIND OF HIGH SCHOOL SEASON AUSTIN HAD. HE COULD BE A DRAFT RISK) – VERY POLISHED PITCHER. 91-93 FASTBALL, 4 PITCHES FOR STRIKES

JORDAN ETIER, MIF, AUSTIN WESTLAKE – DIRTBAG. MOTOR ALWAYS RUNNING. EXCELLENT ATHLETE. GOOD BASEBALL INSTINCTS

BRANDON LOY, MIF, ROWLETT – SMOOTH AND POLISHED WITH THE GLOVE. GREAT FEET. GREAT SPEED. SWINGS THE BAT.

SAM STAFFORD, LHP, KLEIN COLLINS – BIG, PHYSICAL LEFTY WITH A LIVE ARM. NOT SURE ABOUT HIS DRAFT STATUS EITHER.

HUNTER CERVENKA HAS AS MUCH POTENTIAL AS ANYBODY TEXAS SIGNED, BUT HE WAS VERY INCONSISTENT LAST SUMMER. THAT SAID, BAYTOWN STERILNG HAD A FANTASTIC SEASON THIS YEAR, AND I WOULD IMAGINE HUNTER HAD A LOT TO DO WITH IT. SO WE’LL SEE.

3B will be a big question mark for 2009. hopefully shepherd is better than the 3-error debacle he had against rice mid-season, if so he figures to be in the mix. he made some good plays last night

Is Belt old enough to leave? He is a sophomore, and I haven't heard anything about him leaving prior to this. He would be a huge loss when added to danks and KR.

Hopefully Moldenhauer will be back 100% next season, if so he's our LF. I think Keyes has the arm for RF, and I also think Lusson has the range and smarts to play CF. He might even be able to bat 1 or 2 with his ability to get on base.

Clark will be another big question mark going into next season, both his health and his draft status. If he comes back and is about as healthy as he was this year, i'm guessing he'll stay at 3B. If he's 100% after the offseason and comes back for a senior campaign, I'd like to see him back at C. I like Rupp, but he doesn't stack up to a fully healthy Clark.

i'm guessing our rotation would ideally be some combination of ruffin, workman, wood and boening. when on their games, those are some outstanding pitchers. not real sure about the other guys, if jungmann comes he sounds like a guy that will push for a major role, sounds a lot like workman. bullpen needs to develop, but thomas, green, shinaberry and belt are a good place to start

i have limited knowledge about the freshman, so hopefully there are a few that push for playing time and maybe even starting roles

a lot to be excited about. i'm ready for fall ball

Jungmann is ahead of where Workman was at this time last year.

Runey Davis has got to get a look in center field, I would think. Dude can fly, and he can swing it a little bit too. Connor Rowe fits that bill as well, come to think of it!

I didn't think about Belt being as young as he is. The one year at San Jac threw me off, I think. He should be back and be a major contributor.

Very intersted to see where Riley Boening is after the summer. That guy should be a weekend badass, but the couple times I watched/listened to him throw this year, I don't know if he started a single hitter 0-1. That's an exaggeration, obviously, but the point is, if he doesn't trust his stuff, he can't be of much help. He was constantly pitching from behind, and he's better than that. He could be a dominator.

My assessment of this team coming into the season (Omaha potential, like most thought) was based on Kasparek and Boening being dominating forces on the weekend, and they never really were. Obviously Kenn did much better toward the latter part of the year, but think about where this team would have been had Chance Ruffin not come on like he did. Or Workman, for that matter. I would love to see Boening show up. He will be a big part of the question mark coming into 2009.

Agree about Runey Davis. He needs the chance to play cuz he could develop into a great leadoff hitter. I would like to see this lineup

C- Cameron Rupp
1B - Brandon Belt
2B - Travis Tucker
SS - David Hernandez
3B - Tant Shepard
LF - Russell Moldenhauer
CF- Runey Davis
RF - Kyle Lusson or Kevin Keyes

SP - Chance Ruffin
SP - Austin Wood
SP - Taylor Jungmann (Hopefully, if not then Riley Boening

Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone know when guys are selected for summer leagues like Beatrice Bruins or San Diego Forresters? We make a few games in Beatrice to keep up w our players to fill in our open summer weekends.

Keyes, Lusson and Moldenhauer all had a shot at the open LF slot this year. It looks to me like Moldenhauer got the most playing time because of his consistency at the plate. What types of growth is the staff looking for from Keyes and Lusson that would round out their games and get them more playing time?

BANKERHORN THANKS FOR ALL YOU INFO, WE DONT GET MUCH INFO UP NORTH.

THATS RIGHT I'M STILL YELLING, TURN YOU VOLUME DOWN IF YOU DONT LIKE IT.

I don't see any way Jungmann ever plays for us.

I said the same thing about Grossman in the past, but he has disappointed the scouts this spring and might not like his draft position.

I think Dicharry is now projected to go in the top 3-4 rounds, too, so I'd be surprised if he doesn't sign.

Most summer rosters have been determined. You can go to the Cape league home page and then look through each teams rosters. Several players seem to go there and then several have been on the Santa Barbara Forresters in the past also.

I GUESS I'M STILL IN A DAZE OVER THIS YEAR. I FELT WITH THE PLAYERS WE HAD WE WOULD STILL BE PLAYING.
FIRST I THOUGH IT WAS THE PITCHING
THEN THE LEADERSHIP & COACHING. THEN THE HITTING. WHAT DOES THE BASEBALL PROGRAM NEED TO GET BACK TO WHERE IT WAS 3 YEARS AGO.

PROGRAM WAS REALLY BLESSED WITH PLAYERS WHO HAD A COMBINATION OF TALENT AND "IT" DURING THE EARLY PART OF THE DECADE - JOHNSTON, STREET, COX, MAJEWSKI, JUST TO NAME A HANDFUL. EASY TO GET SPOILED WITH A RUN LIKE THAT.

I THINK THE KIDS ON THE TEAM THIS YEAR REALLY DID GIVE IT EVERYTHING THEY HAD, BUT SOME ATHLETES JUST HAVE A KNACK FOR REACHING AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT LEVEL WHEN THE SITUATIONS ARE BIG. AND FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS - PARTICULARLY IN REGIONAL PLAY - WHEN TEXAS HAS NEEDED A BIG HIT, A BIG PITCH, A BIG DEFENSIVE PLAY AT THE PIVOTAL MOMENT IN THE GAME, THEY HAVE NOT HAD THE GUYS WHO HAVE DELIVERED.

GOOD NEWS IS, TEXAS IS LOADED WITH PLAYERS WHO HAVE THE PHYSICAL ABILITY TO DOMINATE AT THE DIVISION I LEVEL, AND THE COACHING IS TOP SHELF. BAD NEWS IS, TALENT AND COACHING HAVE VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH THAT CHARACTERISTIC DESCRIBED ABOVE. PART OF IT IS LEARNED THROUGH EXPERIENCE, AND A BIG PART OF IT COMES FROM WITHIN.
