Star Trek

Son of a Son

Worked a screening last night, all I can say is...WOW. This is EXACTLY how you reboot a classic series. Just enough camp, cheese, and call-backs to be almost flawless. I don't want to go into too much, simply because I may start dropping spoilers.

I will say that I got to see this on IMAX, which is cool, but it was a film print. I am torn whether I would choose to see it on IMAX, or over at Highland 10 in Digital. The visuals were stunning, so its a tough call.

Saw it this evening. Very good movie but it didn't make me too excited or anything. The new kids playing Kirk and Spock were awesome. The plot was very good; action good. Everything kinda just seemed to fit too nicely though...you knew nothing too terribly bad was going to happen. It sets up a nice new timeline for 10 more Star Trek Movies to be made (yikes!)

In terms of Star Trek movies, I'd rank it #2 or #3 behind The Wrath of Khan and perhaps First Contact.

Can't wait for Terminator Salvation.

Getting some bad reviews from Trekkies though: Reviews

Saw it last night and I thought it was really good. I'm a Trek fan that's been disenchanted by Voyager, Enterprise, and the last two movies. Before this movie, I had been of the opinion that they should just bury Star Trek for a couple decades and let the novelty fully wear off before they try anything new with it. But with most/all of the old Trek management kicked to the curb, I had hope. They changed up the canon some, sort of the way the new Battlestar Galactica did with its original series, but I'm curious to see where they take this in subsequent movies. And I hope there are subsequent movies.

Bones and Spock were probably the best-cast roles.

I'm not a die-hard Trekkie, but I was a fan of the first series and TNG (not so much of Voyager

, DS9, or the one with S. Bakula). I remember watching the 10th(?) Star Trek movie, "Nemesis" on cable and turning it off after 20 minutes. But this movie is the best. Star Trek. Movie. Ever.

JJ f'n Abrams!

Just got done seeing it. Loved it. I've seen all the movies, and most of the original series, TNG, and DS9. This was far better than all of them. This was a real movie. The other movies played like an extended TV episode. Nice reboot of a series that had become very dry.

JJ Abrams is still batting 1.000. If only he would have done Star Wars Episode 1.

completely bad ***! Loved it, and looking forward to future sequels. I'm definitely re-invested.

Watched the original series, TNG and Voyager, as well as the movies as they came out. Did not get into DS9, and after the first couple movies, we did not rush out to see them.

Saw this one today, and it was great! Enough lines that harkened back to elicit a smile or giggle - dammit Jim! Great movie, but I was waiting for a tribble to fall out of a compartment!

I'm not going unless they save a few whales.
Any original Star Trek fans see it, and could you get past the new actors? Seems like it might be hard to accept a new Captain Kirk, but I guess I'll go see it anyhow.

Spoiler Alert....

I'll say I had two problems with it.

1) I guess that to Abrams and Lindelof, Sci-Fi = time travel. Lost is going through this paradoxical time travel stuff too. There's more to the genre guys.

2) Why do we care what happens in the movie? If the previous movies are any indication, then have Spock slingshot around the sun, and put things back the way they should be.

That being said, I liked the new Kirk, and the new Scotty. I really liked the new Bones. Didn't care much for the way the new Spock was written. Too emotional. I wonder if Abrams understood what the Vulcans were all about.

Had more than two problems with it...

3. If you (Eric Bana) get sent back in time and your planet hasn't been destroyed yet, why don't you warn everyone and start a mass evacuation? Clearly they had the technology for it. Now YOU'RE responsible for not saving your planet, dickweed.

4. If you see a giant laser drill drilling into your planet, why do you wait for some ******* from Starfleet to tell you to GTFO? Just GTFO, man! Or is it like the Coke bottle that's fallen from the heavens and you have to debate just exactly the hell what it is before you do anything?

5. Now do they go after Eric Bana or do they try to rescue his planet and, regardless, is there just a mystical reboot if they kill him or rescue everyone else since Eric Bana won't be going back in time to alter anything? Or is it just an alternate timeline that keeps on going REGARDLESS?

It was entertaining, but, man, was it stupid.

I loved this movie.

Spock is half human, hence he struggles with his emotions. In the Star Trek that everyone was used to, Spock had a better grip on his emotions by that time.

SPOILER

the entire star trek universe will be altered now, but that's how they choose to do this particlar reboot. George Kirk died, unable to raise his son, Vulcan is gone, Spock's mother is gone. James Kirk is now captain but attained it differently than what Ambassador Spock knows, because this Kirk's universe was altered. There's so much that is different because of the Romulan's interference in history. This will make for fun sequels because Abrams broke that tie to the old universe, and doesn't have to stick to the same history. The federation is already going to be largely affected by an absent Vulcan.

Yeah, I agree. Bana should have just gone back to Romulus and said, "everyone pack your crap", or "here's how to get Red Matter, we're going to be ready for the Super Nova".

I don't get it. Why wouldn't Spock say, "F it, I am going to slingshoot around the f'ing sun and go back to fix this. Afterall, I've done that twice before."

And while we're on it, during Voyager, there was a Starfleet Temporal Department that monitored alterations in the timeline. I think this clearlly represents a conflict in the temporal prime directive. Wouldn't they be involved?

Too many plot holes open up when you go with Time Travel. Move on to a different plot device JJ. That being said, I still liked the movie.

One of my friends just said that Bana doesn't go to Romulus because either 1) he's too bat-**** crazy to think of it or 2) he's too bat-**** crazy to not want to punish Spock before saving Romulus because he has a hundred years before Romulus is destroyed.

I'm not buying it.

Are you suggesting Bana should show up on Romulus, say he's from the future and the planet needs to be evacuated because in 100 years it will blow up? How long do you think it would take them to throw him into their version of the loony bin?

SPOILER QUESTION

If the supernova destroyed Romulus, then wouldn't a black hole do the same thing in a different way?

I think Bana could have showed up to Romulus and had them believe him. Afterall, he did have technology to show them what happened in the future.

Why didn't Bana go after all the sub-warp shuttlecraft that escaped the Kelvin? Even if elder Kirk damaged Bana's ship, he could have had time to repair it, and then go after the shuttles. They weren't going anywhere quick.

What did Bana do in the 25 years he waited for Spock?

When you use time travel as a plot device, you open yourself up to a lot of plot holes. It's not a well thought out way re-boot a series. Why not just have a flashback? There would have been fewer holes.

That said, I still had a good time. Well worh the money I spent on it.

SPOILERS

UTViking. There are two parts of the answer to your question.

Presuming that the black hole only possessed the mass of the original sun, then no, there is no reason to presume that it would be anywhere near as dangerous as supernova... as long as the collapse was instantaneous... which is wasn't because you could watch it... and a prolonged death (even in the terms of seconds or milliseconds) would result in a violent death... ie, a supernova.

That said, the problems extend beyond that... how the shockwave could reach romulus without effecting Spock is strange. Why Spock thought a black hole would put the shockwave back in the bottle (so to speak) and any number of other oddities which where hard to explain... like why exactly there was a large brewery in the engine room... or exactly how the enterprise made it home with its multiple warp cores... etc etc etc.

Basically, this was the worst science of any star trek movie or TV show I've ever seen... pretty much the whole way round... that said, it was highly entertaining, and I'm prepared to let a bunch of that go for the sake of watching a fun story.

I saw it tonight down in Buenos Aires with two English gents and an Argentine. It was nice to see the United States saving the planet AGAIN!!!
It reminded me of when they were showing "Independence Day" at my hostel in Istanbul 11 1/2 years ago and I was like "The USA is saving the planet AGAIN?!?!" We just keep on doing it.

One thing I've been thinking about:

Hasn't anyone been bothered by all of the similarities to "TOP GUN"?

The comparisons are all over the place, although this wasn't nearly as homo-erotic. But did it bother anyone else, or was everyone fine with it?
