Stafford arrested for trying to buy some booze

In Manhattan after Saturday's game. Cue the typical alcohol overreaction. A 20 year old college kid with a fake idea, imagine that! And as far as the judgment issue goes with drinking during the middle of a series, news flash: baseball players sometimes drink the night before a game (especially a midweek starter). The only harm to come from this is the minor distraction it causes. He didn't dress on Sunday. Sit him against La Tech, if you must, and lets be done with it.

My only question is what is he doing paying for booze, aren't there enough alcoholic longhorn tailgaters?

Other than that, stupid non story...

Not all college kids are that stupid, but I'll agree there are much worse things for someone to get arrested for.

What I'm curious about is why no one seemed to know about it. He was used as a pinch runner in the Friday game, which indicates to me that our coaches didn't know that he spent some part of the night before in jail. Do they not have someone monitoring these guys while they're on the road?

I think the fact that he isn't being punished further is because we don't have any midweek games left anyway, and no coach is going to bench a player for the postseason over something minor like that. Still think it would've been better to say he won't play for the remainder of the regular season than to say he won't be punished further, especially given that our coach has an alcohol-related arrest on his record. This kind of makes it look like it's being sanctioned by Augie. JMO.

Sounds like a foolish decision made by a typical 20 year old. You would hope that kids on a road trip would be smarter and it doesnt speak well for this kids basic common sense (what are you doing buying alcohol on a road trip for the baseball team, not smart) but hopefully he learns a lesson and is better for it.

Unfortunate, sounds like it was fairly minor in the grand scheme of things, but when you are a scholarship athlete, your name will get in the papers when anything happens. These guys have to know that, and should act accordingly. Things that others get away with are blown up in importance when you are in the media light all the time.

Apparently the state of Kansas is cracking down on fake IDs in recent months. They have even organized stings recently where kids were arrested for using fake IDs even though they hadn't actually been served alcohol, so it appears that they are particularly sensitive about this sort of thing. That would explain why he was arrested and not just given a citation.

That sucks, because I lived there one year, which seemed like ten, and I can tell you there is literally nothing to do there except buy watered down beer and drive around looking at wheat fields.
Anyhow, a minor suspension should be plenty for this infraction. It shouldn't be ignored or glossed over, but it isn't the crime of the century or anything.

Silly kid mistake. In less than a year he wouldn't even be breaking a law just having a social drink out. Just like many adults do, even a night before they have a big day at the office. A few drinks responsibly is a personal choice, not a vice. I do mean it's a personal choice next year, Sam. lol Now doing this on a big UT baseball roadtrip and causing even the slightest friction right before post-season...isn't that a felony in its own right???
