Stadium Boom Deepens Municipal Woes from NY Times

I believe the city should support the team... pro teams is a tourist attraction that has billions of dollars of economic impact contributed to a city over the life of a stadium.

There is now law that says you have to... ergo Dallas.

Another name for this is "Welfare for the rich".
They want the taxpayers to build a stadium and then charge these same taxpayers to watch the games on the NFL Channel.

If the pro team expects the public to pay for the stadium, then the public should get a vote in hiring players, coaches and other team personnel.

I am a big proponent of pay as you go. The governement likes to blame individuals for getting themselves into financial mess but then they go around show such a poor example.

Arlington seems to have fared pretty well on voting for higher taxes to build new stadiums. They paid off the Ballpark pretty quickly
and while they voted for taxes to pay approx 335 Mil of Cowboy Stadium Jerrah had to pony up nearly 700 Mil of his own. Arlington will enjoy the money spent in Arlington for years to come at both venues.
OTOH Dallas looks like the dunceof a city it is.

As long as it is put to a vote and the people who will pay the taxes get a voice in deciding whether to pay or not it seems fair

I see your point but remember the name of the football team is Dallas Cowboys who played games in Irving for 30 years and now play in Arlington.
In this case IIRC Dallas called Jerry's bluff and Jerry had 4 aces.Who was the loser here/ Not Jones. ( and I hate saying that. )

I also realize that sometimes the tax increase voters in a city vote for are on travel, cars, hotels etc.
Still Arlington voted for only 335 Mil obligation of a over Billion $ site and once again they win

Certain teams like Dallas and Green Bay are special cases. Jerry Jones isn't stupid (when it comes to money). He knows the Dallas cowboys are not as profitable in anywhere else in the country. The cowboys will be in the Dallas area for ever. And Jerry would have paid for that stadium himself, but he tried to get a little something from a city and he did. IT didn't matter to him if it was irving, dallas, arlington, carollton, or denton, and it doesn't matter to cowboy fans either. I guess the Coyboys are lucky in that they live in an area with many distinct cities, and one of them was bound to play ball.
It's similar to many other sports teams whose names are different than where they actually play.

Didn't even pay attention to what your opinions might have been. Totally sidetracked by the grammar and sentence structure. Normally, that stuff slides by, but it was pretty darn amusing that you went back and edited it and still... ...

I believe the city should support the team.

[P]ro teams are tourist attractions that have billions (very questionable) of dollars of economic impact on a city over the life of a stadium. (Just one possible revision)

There is no law that says you have to (what?)... ergo (therefore?) Dallas.

Like I said. I normally ignore spelling, typing, grammar and the like, but the fact that you reread your post and only came up with the "no" for "now" change was amusing.

Let's not make this into anything. I get to laugh at myself all the time.

I couldn't begin to list the number of local Arlington businesses - particularly restaurants all over the city - which are experiencing a literal boom in business since the Cowboys' stadium opened. These are not merely words-through-the-grapevine....these are local business owners I know personally. Every major shopping center - even ones several miles from the stadium - are MUCH busier on event days than otherwise. The mayor was recently quoted as saying the city's bonds - like the bonds on the Ballpark - are already on track to be paid off at least 10 years ahead of schedule.

This is not to say that public financing of stadiums is always a good idea......but it appears Arlington is doing very well with theirs.

How idiotic was it to build a baseball stadium in the DFW area and not put a roof on it? The Rangers wilt every summer. They often start off strong and then die on the vine. It is too hot there to play out in the sun for 81 games.

So the fans get stuck with talented teams which cannot compete fairly with teams from further north or with better weather.

I went to a couple of games in Arizona the last few years and they play indoors. Great stadium and I did not walk out soaked in sweat and dehydrated. That is not my experience in going to games in Arlington.
