We are heading down in August, anyone have some tips on what to do, not to do?

We are probably renting a villa on the Dutch side, 4 or 5 nights.

We were thinking about fishing, anyone ha dluck in that department?

Thanks for any input

We just returned from St. Barths last week, but we have been to St. Martin before. We didn't really hang out much on the Dutch side however. We stayed on Orient Beach and would take the 5 min. drive each night to eat in Grand Case (a small village with a bunch of great restaurants).

Been to St. Maarten three times.. each time, stayed here..

Orient Beach is the clothing optional beach... some ok snorkeling right off the beach.. .a lot of people... there's a bar on the beach serving a drink called a "Penis Coloda." Drink.. enjoy.. get smashed.

There's a small island about a mile off-shore.. small ferries take people out there for a few hours... the island is unique in that it has this "mud"... you cake yourself in it... roll around in the sand.. let is sit for awhile.. go into the ocean and it washes off... and your skin feels INCREDIBLY smooth.. similar to a body scrub in a spa.

Driving to the villa, you'll pass a house with a large tree in its front yard.. it's actually a very small "to go" restaurant.. although they do have a picnic table. They smoke lobster there (the spiny lobster with no claws).. GET ONE! They are unbelieveable.

As someone else said... Grand Case is a great place to go to dine.. is on the French side.. a lot of restaurants.. french, seafood.

We liked shopping in Marigot more than Phillipsburg... smaller, less "touristy"... there's a cigar shop there.. great cuban selection... hit the local wine shop in Marigot as well... pretty good selection.

Phillipsburg is more touristy.. that's where the cruise ships go.. more t-shirt type shops along with many stores.

At Oyster Pond, there's a small restaurant right on the dock... it's run by an American ex-pat... food is average, but the drinks are strong and good stories to be told.

Snorkeling at Dawn Beach is good, but the current is stronger there.. saw from sea turtles there. And, be sure and hit the different beaches for snorkeling.

We rented a dive boat and dive master to go scuba diving. If you're a diver, highly recommend that too.

Take in the local flavor as much as possible... a great trip awaits!

I'm posting on my iPhone and don't have cut and paste. Someone please post the obligatory 747 flying low above the beach picture. Thanks.

Did a simialr trip to Pancho Villa. HIghly recommend staying on the French side if you prefer a slower pace, better beaches, better food. The Dutch side has the shopping, casinos & nightlife.

Orient Beach is not all "clothing optional". One end of the beach has the nduist resort...unfortunately, the OLD nekkid folks like to stroll down to your clothing mandatory end so they can show off their shriveled up nubllies.

Embrace the nekkid beach! Granted, there will be many people you'd rather not see naked, but still..that's not why you're there. Relaxing beach heavy with Europeans (who are not as uptight about their bodies) and if there's a cruise ship in town for the day, people off the ship. The times I have been there, it has not been a sexual atmosphere at all (well, except in the cabins at the resort on Orient Beach). It's fun.

I love me's some nekkid beaches.

Funniest thing I saw on a nekkid beach was on the island of Samos (Greece). There was an older overweight couple lying out next to each other... and I couldn't tell if they were a man & woman, two men, or two women.

He had man breasts & no chest hair. Her boobs were in man breast form. He was cold (or something) and both had similar pubes. PLUS, you don't want to stare until you figure it out.

I've heard of people starting to look like their pets, but starting to look like their spouses was new to me.

There is a restaurant in the Marigot (French side) marina called Tropicana. Go there, have a three-course lunch, and bring back a bottle of their house rum.

Sometimes.. it's like watching a train wreck. On one of our visits, we were lounging in chairs on the Club Orient beach... a lady, friendly, very nice in personality.. sits about 5 feet away.. strips down.. and as God is my witness, she had pubic hair from hip to hip... it was like looking at Dr.J in his old ABA days!

Then.. mid afternoon... a black guy walks down to the beach.. it was almost dragging as he walks in the surf... a short while later, he walks out of the ocean.. and again... it was the same size!! My now ex looks at me and says.. "Say, what ever happened to shrinkage anyway?"

Then, there was the late 20 year old woman from France.. walking along the beach, holding the hand of her perhaps 2 year old..both naked as the day they were born.. and she had the most amazing body I have even seen.. a true work of art.

You will see all kinds!

oh.. as for deep sea fishing.. check out this website..

True...there is one side of Orient that is totally clothing optional. If you don't like it, avoid going down that direction. Typically, the totally nude folk don't venture down away from their section (except for early in the morning). The remainder of the beach (and any other beach for that matter) is topless. Well, we call it topless, the Euros call it normal. I was laying out in front of our hotel one day...wife went to get a massage...and these 5 topless 20 yr. old Euro-chicks stop 20 ft. in front of me to have a beach volley-ball game. I had to pinch myself.

The following site has great information.

Been a while since I went but had a great time, stayed on the Dutch side. Word of advice, careful when driving from French to Dutch side at night. If being waved down to stop, DO NOT STOP.

We loved Mullet Bay (Dutch), and Pinel Island (French). Ran by Orient after Pinel, seemed like a windy beach. When we went, Cupecoy was still around and was the other "Nude" beach.

We did a great day sail to Prickly Pear on a large catamaran they left the Dutch side.

Let me know if you'd like a link to my pics from the trip.

We stayed at the Towers of Mullet Bay.

You will need to rent a car. The chicken/ribs on the beach/restaurants is great and the hot sauce is HOT and great.

Here's my old post from Hornfans a while back, scroll down to dlatin.
