Spyware and Adware prevention software

is there such a product out there ? I am getting about tired of spending hours cleaning **** off of various peoples computers because they like to download dumb ****.

I know about Spybot, ad-aware, and all the stuff like that. But that stuff only works after the crap is on the system. Im looking for something that would work like a virus protection that will tell you not to download or whatever BEFORE.

A lot of that stuff just automatically loads when you surf, ESPECIALLY when using Internet Explorer.

One of my co-workers is plagued by that ****, because he uses Explorer with Active-X enabled and stuff. And just won't listen when we tell him that's his problem.

I use Mozilla, with most of the automation either disabled or set to ask first, I almost never see spyware, and have never had any malware show up. I also have no active desktop stuff running (stock tickers and the like), another apparent hole in uSlop's security....

When looking for spyware be very CAREFUL there are fakes out there. From one of the websites

I'll be using Firefox.

SpywareBlaster will, when updated properly, prevent spyware from loading in the first place. I'm too lazy to link it, but you can find it at Major Geeks or Webattack.com

It is also a freebie.

Another convert to Firefox here too. I tried it a couple of weeks ago and I have been happy with the switch.

Just a word of caution. I used IE and switched to Avant. I also use Firefox. Just because you have Firefox DOES NOT mean you will not encounter spyware/crapware. A lot fo this crap gets on your system through scripting and/or Active X. Well ... Firefox also allows scripting and ActiveX - so just because you run FF doesn't mean you can sail away.

You are correct. FF does have native ActiveX - but I was actually assuming a full plug-in install with the ActiveX. My point was to be that enabled ActiveX and scripting is available in either FF or IE. At the very least, ActiveX should always be prompted.

ActiveX is a good thing - and it is a very bad thing.

I also read that in the paper today about the government advising to discontinue IE. How much of that is sour grapes over the lawsuit I wonder? I rarely look to the government for any advice, but this just might be one case of good.
