Spybot/Spyware problem?

I may have a virus (but AVG has not said I do and t runs daily) or something less than fun going on. I try to update SpyBot and it only gets 5 percent of the way through the update and shuts down.

I run a scan and nothing comes up, only 7 or so negligible risks, which I delete. But in a week now it finds nothing. It used to find at least a couple of things from surfing around.

I went to some C/Net page to download and tried to download it again but it does not go. I wonder if it is because I still have it loaded on my computer.

Should I delete the version or what I have on here now and try to reload? Should I try a different brand? Run in safe mode?

I am not noticing much of anything really bad other than a longer load/download speed and more grinding on the hard drive than usual.

Go get this program (EasyCleaner) : The Link

And run "Unnecessary", "Clear Files", "Clear Cookies", "Clear History", "MRU", and "Registry".

Defrag your system.

Then see if it's still grinding.

I'd then do what the others have said (run on-line AdAware).

Try manually updating Spybot (only let it DL and install one thing at a time).

If it's still grinding, try one of the computer support forums, like Major Geeks...

try running your anti-virus software in Safe Mode. There are viruses/trojans that specifically kill the anti-virus and spyware software as soon as the process start. Running in Safe Mode won't allow the virus software to start up. If that doesn't work, try running the online Trend Micro house-call scan.

ty for the help, just what i was hoping for, a variety of different options which should cover all bases. ty.

I will get to this shortly and inform what is working or worked. The drive does not grind out very much, just more than before and that it is not letting me update the spybot online leads me to believe a ne'erdogooder is on board. Hope they enjoy Hornfans and home improvement.

If you are using IE like me, everytime you go on the 'net click on tools>internet options>browsing history>delete all. I've found that this will delete all cookies and temp files, and AdAware run later will pick up almost nothing. But, I am not as computer savvy as above posters.
