Spurs Land McDyess

Almost averaged a double double last year, plays stout defense, and by all accounts a good guy and teammate. I'll gladly take him.

People don't always have to agree with you. It's called an opinion. I really like McDyess and this acquisition.

I've always liked McDyess' game. Good pick up for the Spurs, who needed more inside depth to compete with other elite team.

As far as age goes, the Spurs are actually not that different from the Lakers when it comes to the star players.

Lakers: Kobe is 30, Gasol 29, Odom and Artest both 30 by mid-season, Fisher 34 (35 by beginning of the season). Only Bynum at 21 (22 by mid-season) is still developing among the top contributors.

Spurs: Manu will be 32 by start of the season, Duncan 33, Parker 27, and RJ 29.

So when it comes to the 'Big Four' for these two teams, the average age will be 30 for both the Spurs and the Lakers by mid-season. The bigger issue for the Spurs is that 2 of their foursome had injury issues by the end of last season. I am sure age did not help, but the injury bug can strike at any age. Just ask Bynum.

Where the age/experience philosophy differs is in the role players. The Lakers appear to favor more athletic, developing young players, while the Spurs liked experienced, playoff-ready veterans in the past. But even that appear to be changing as the Spurs try to get younger this summer through 3 draft picks and RJ, and Lakers gain more experience by favoring Artest over Ariza.

This has been a very interesting summer in the NBA, with a few big-names still out there. But as in the years past, injuries will go a long way in determining the next NBA champion.

I guess my head is stuck in the sand, but I like the pick up of McDyess - and when you factor in Richard Jefferson, along with a steal in the draft of DeJuan Blair, this year's outlook for the Spurs is very bright.

The Spurs also look to have 5 starters who have been at least a 14 ppg scorer recently if they play Parker, Jefferson, Ginobili, Gooden, and Duncan.

Free agents that may not be back = Drew Gooden (depending on whether the Spurs pick up another big and whether he gets offers from other teams), Ime Udoka (probably out), Jacque Vaughn (almost surely out), and Marcus Williams (slim chance to make the roster). Bonner is now expendable but has one year left on his contract at 3.2 mil, but that type of contract could find him on the trade market. So far the roster looks like this: Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, Bonner, Finley (exercised his player option for this last year), Roger Mason,George Hill, Ian Mahinmi, Richard Jefferson, Antonio McDyess, DeJuan Blair, and Marcus Haislip (from Europe). That's twelve and you can have a roster of 15 max and each game have 3 inactive. Leaves room for either rookies or free agent pickups (Malik Hairston?)and don't count out some more moves/trades.

Almost forgot Jack McClinton from Miami who was the best 3 point shooter in college last year. He may have a chance to make the roster if he plays well in the summer league. And they have the rights to some other Euros and have about 7 or 8 other free agents on their summer roster. Should be really competitive.

I'll keep sticking my head in the sand and support this MESS of a front office.. Oh, if we could only have Cubes as an owner/GM......

This isn't intended as a long term solution. The Spurs are aiming at another championship run before TD's skills fall off significantly and this is another step in that direction. I also like the acquisition of former first rounder Marcus Haislip - who was one of the top overseas free agents this off season - to provide depth in the post.

Jefferson and McDyess are huge pickups. HUGE. Jefferson gives them athleticism at the wing that they perhaps haven't had since Derek Anderson (Manu has deceiving athleticism but 1st expression isn't "amazing athleticism").

McDyess gives Duncan some MUCH needed inside help. I did the math last summer, but in 2008 in the LA playoff series, Duncan averaged almost 20 rebounds a game. Seriously. It was like 18 boards per game. That's crazy. But the crazy part is despite this, the Spurs were still out-rebounded on the series by ~5 boards per game. That's even crazier. How can you get almost 20 boards per game from 1 guy and still get out rebounded as a team by a healthy margin?

The big reason is Obierto played decent minutes and still couldn't get 4 boards per game. That's like Abe Lemmons famous quote about a dead guy. Obierto had a great run in 2007 but he sucked in 2008. In 2009, he got few minutes but that is b/c he sucked.

McDyess gives Duncan some rebounding and defensive help that he hasn't had since Five Oh was on the court in 2003.

This has been a huge off season for the Spurs and as a Spurs fan, I'm pumped.

Lakers are still the favorite b/c they are the defending champ and they had a nice pickup in Artest (despite losing Ariza to Houston).

Last summer, when the Spurs basically made no additions to help Duncan out inside or to help for Manu's health concerns, I told my Spurs friends that 2009 would be a rough year and I was right.
