Spurs Free Agents

Who do they re-sign and who do they let go?

Please tell me Oberto is a FA so they can clear that waste of cap space.

Why is it that every other team takes the really old guys and makes them assistant coaches or special assistants, but the Spurs keep throwing them out on the court?

My personal take is that everyone besides the big 3 and Bowen should be at minimum considered for trades. I'm not saying they need an entirely new team- I just think they need to be creative in bringing in some younger talent.

Horry has to retire, and I personally think Barry and Finley should do the same. Another year is not going to help any. Kurt Thomas played well and was definitely an asset, but he's overpriced for what he provides (due $8.1 mil next season).

Who would you want to see them go after on the free agent/trade market?

Dirty, the chances seem to be somewhere between slim and none unless they unload a lot of contracts. I heard all they had was the mid-level exception ($5.7 mil) and the veteran one which is less. They have 10 people under contract and will probably bring back Thomas - and they want to keep their first rounder, Hill. Horry and Finley are question marks - and they are looking hard at the available free agents but don't have much running room.

I don't think Battier is a free agent. They won't come close to bidding for a guy like Brand, Arenas, or Baron Davis -- they don't have the cap room.

They need to re-sign Barry, if indeed he did opt out of his contract. They also need to re-sign Thomas since Splitter didn't come over from Spain. I would not be upset to see Finley go. Horry was injured and terrible last year, but I still wouldn't mind him on the roster for the minimum, which he apparently is willing to take. As much as people talk about their lack of athleticism on the wings, they still need some hustle players and muscle up front.

I'd look for them to go after lower profile guys like Roger Mason from Washington and Jarvis Hayes from Detroit. I'd also like to see them make a run at James Jones, but he's probably out of their price range. Same thing with James Posey. Eduardo Najera is another guy that might fit, but again will probably be asking for too much money.
