Spring practice

I have been very impressed by the intensity and speed of these practices. Every drill is run at game speed and conditions. Every drill where shooting is involved must end with a made basket followed by a rebound and an outlet pass. Even when they are shooting free throws they must box out and rebound with their hands above their heads while jumping for the ball.

Conditioning has been a major emphasis and telling the players that must work on this over the summer. This has been a struggle for a few of the players; however attitude has been pretty good about this.

All three seniors and Earnie W. have been there running the drills with the team. I see an emphasis on getting our former players very involved with program. Tradition! Tradition!

Coach Aston is very focused on all the details (footwork, energy level, form, rebounding, etc.) that will become second nature during game time. She is a teacher and the players seem to be responding to this approach.

With only two more practice sessions left until the fall, it is important that each player know what they must work on over the summer. Only the strength and conditioning coach can work with them over the summer. Too bad the men's rules don't apply to the women this summer.

Overall, I believe that They are off to a good start.

Summer is what determines winning teams come Winter. During the season everyone is practicing the same and generally improves by about the same rate as most everyone else. April->October is when you set yourself apart, for better or worse, from the competition.

I thought rules were the same for both?

You are right that summer work will mean a lot as how the team does during the season. I hope they will work at it like it's a full time job that they love.

In men's basketball the coaches can work with their players twice a week one on one; the women's coach can not.

The last two practices are Monday afternoon and Tuesday evening.

They are open practices. The times are still some what what up in the air. Probably 3:30 or 4:00pm on Monday and around 8:00pm on Tuesday.

cool. might be able to make Monday's but certainly Tuesday's practice. I assume they will be at Cooley rather than at the FEC.

Anyone have any updates? I think its going to be an amazing season having practices being open again, and I also think that will help to smooth things over with the portion of the fanbase that complained about being shut off from the team.

I so agree. I am really looking forward to next season. My understanding is that one on the many tasks Amie Smith Bradley has been assigned is working on building/rebuilding the fan base. Hopefully Amie will be reaching out to a lot of the faithful for input..

I just spoke to the basketball department and there will be an hour workout tonight from 8:00 to 9:00. It seemed to be a surprise to the woman with whom I spoke regarding the interest in the workout.

She indicated that the coaches would be making a decision if future practices would be open to the public.
