Headed to DC for a week in April, a long time wish of the Mishtress'. Currently wer'e trying to sort out staying out of town at a hotel near the metro, or staying very close in.

Would appreciate specific recommendations of hotels for either option, and opinions on whether there's a clearl better choice between the two strategies.

And a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.

Stay close in and you can take advantage of public transportation. If you want to take a trip out of town, they have zip cars. I spent about 6 months working in DC in 2007. We stayed at the Park Hyatt on 24th and M. I HIGHLY recommend this hotel. The staff is fantastic and the hotel is just divine. The rooms are big and the bathroom, well, walk in rainwater showers is all I have to say.

Their rates are high, but you can usually get better rates through a corporate travel office or if you are an AMEX cardholder. I would just shop around.

If you want any other info, feel free to PM me. We pretty much lived it up for 6 months while we were there.

One big rec...skip the White House tour. Not worth the time it took to go through security.

Priceline Wash. DC by the White House for $100/ night for a 4 or 5 star hotel and see what you get. We got the Waldorf for $100/ night over New Years 2 years ago.

Pick you out a few hotels. Call and ask for the manager or Sales Manager. Tell them what you want and how many days you'll be there, emphasizing that you be there Friday, Saturday & Sunday nights. Tell them to make you a deal and that you have the offer out to several hotels and first good offer is accepted.

When it comes to public transportation, the subway stops in Reston about a block from the Key Bridge Marriott, which is across the river from Georgetown. Crystal City is the same type deal.

I would suggest you take a look at the Courtyard by Marriott on Connecticutt (across street from the Hilton). Usually good weekend rates.

You may find some good deals on the larger hotels around M Street.

I recommend staying in town and taking cabs or public transportation. Parking is horrible and traffic is worse. Enjoy.

I've found priceline to be pretty good too. I have gotten the Capital Hilton several times for family members at $89/night (4 star search near the Capital). It's a good walk to the monuments one way and two blocks another way to the metro (red line).

Capitol Hill Suites was recently renovated. It's 2 blocks from the capitol and a block from the metro. My parents stayed there a couple of times, seemed kinda nice.
