Spring Awakening

I saw Spring Awakening tonight in Houston at the Hobby Center. I went with my wife and two kids (ages 15 and 14). Umm.... Interesting? Is that the right word?

I saw it Saturday night and really enjoyed it, but knew what to expect. I would imagine seeing it with teenage kids would be an interesting experience. I bet they were mortified to be sitting next to their parents during certain points. I would have felt uncomfortable sitting next to my parents watching it and I am in my mid-twenties.

My mom took me to see Rent when I was 12 in London, not really knowing what to expect. I am sure she felt similar sentiments to you yesterday. I was pretty red-faced sitting next to her as well.

I was there Saturday night and sat next to 2 ladies from Corpus. They were sitting together and each had a teenage daughter in attendance in seats away from the Moms. I am glad I was not going to be at the post play meal when Moms and daughters talked over what they had seen and heard.

I went to a Beach Boys concert back in the '60s.

Lots of prepubescent girls and boys were there with their parents.

I was 25 and was there to see the opening act, whom I had heard some buzz about.

Out comes The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

They assaulted the mostly unsuspecting crowd with a wall of sound from a wall of Marshall amps, punctuated by Jimi's humping, hunching, leering and his lascivious sounding vocals.

Foxy Lady, indeed.

I was fascinated as I witnessed several thousand young teenagers and pre-teens simultaneously hitting or, at least, getting a hint of puberty.

When The Beach Boys came out a little later, they were good as they played "Surfer Girl," "In My Room" and "Be True To Your School."

But the "damage" had already been done.

And I'm sure that many of the parents there remembered to "take the T-Bird away," whenever such issues came up in the future.

Hendrix was soon replaced for the rest of the tour.

I saw it in LA last month...this is one of those musicals that relies heavily on the caliber of the cast. The way I understood it, the broadway cast was fantastic sweeping it to all sorts of buzz and Tony wins. Well...the cast in LA (I think one of the guy...was a broadway original) was really mediocre. I think the story is a good one to tell and I don't mind the rock musical score...but it's not a classic in my opinion. Now that I've seen it, I have no desire to see it again if it ever comes around again.

It was funny seeing a bunch of the senior citizens leaving the theater...when the sex scenes took place.

I saw it on Broadway with the original cast about a month after it moved from Off-Broadway, and it was incredible. I always wondered, however, if it would ever go on tour and how audiences outside of NY would receive it. I especially thought about the Hobby Center and some of the regulars (i.e. older patrons) and if the musical would blow their minds.

For those who have attended, have you seen anyone walk out? Not return after intermission? (Edit: Didn't see your mention of blue-hairs leaving)

If you liked the music but were "meh" with the touring cast, get the CD. John Galagher ("Moritz"), for one, is someone that is simply beyond compare.
