Sports and Politics on Hornfans

Alrighty then. Here goes.

While I agree that such a policy is needed, the punishment should fit the crime. To me the punishment is over the top, particularly given these extraordinary times.

It’s like I used to tell my wife when we were younger, if I get the crap (verbally) beaten out of me and the silent treatment for days for just looking at another woman, heck, I might as well cheat if the punishment is going to be the same. (Of course, that argument was really effective...:rolleyes1:)

“Look out Dukesteer! Incoming.”

Duke, I respect your opinion but I think you might view it differently if you were the one responsible for moderating this stuff every day. I have asked repeatedly for folks here to do this and it has not worked, and I don’t have time for subtlety any more.

I respectfully defer.

Dion,

As my dad used to say when I complained about some rule he imposed, "this place is not a democracy. It is a theocracy, and I am Theo." Well, this is your place. You are Theo here, and you've shown yourself to be a fair and just Theo.

Furthermore, it's a good rule. Politics has always entered sports to a point, but it has reached the point at which it dominates and distracts from the sport, making the sport irrelevant and unenjoyable.

One thing though - I don't think the rule is intuitive in the sense that newcomers will not presume it. Accordingly, if you haven't done so already, I'd make sure this rule or a link directly to it is prominently displayed in the sports forums where people will be sure to see it. I think the punishment does fit the crime, so long as people are reasonably sure to know the crime and the punishment.

I am also in favor of this position, cuz it's Dion's site and he can do what he wants. However, to be fair, IMO the "outbreak" of discussions of politics in sports is not being largely driven by people on here *wanting* to interject politics into sports, it's being largely driven by players wanting to interject politics into sports.

No worries gents. We needed better clarity on this.
You are far too gracious. Thanks Dion.
And apologies to all for my part in it.
Think we'll all be happier.
For the record, there are some smart dudes on here and I, for one, am (for the most part) proud of the discourse, believe most to be caring and sincere, learned a little myself, and am certain we will be leaving the world (if not one another) in a better place for our efforts. ;)
We were saving the world, one post at a time.
...But now it's time to focus on our true calling and save our beloved football team. Let's go get it...

@Mr. Deez Thanks for the thoughtful response.

This is it in a nutshell.

I think for many of us, sports is entertainment, a fun diversion from the daily obligations of work, family, politics, etc. This may sound naïve but I think there is also a certain purity and innocence about a ball game we love, and some of us played in our youth. I just want to enjoy that without all the somber noise of politics at the margins, and I know others feel the same.

@dukesteer expressed his objection to the policy as being harsh, and I can’t disagree with him. It is not my intent to be a hard-*** but we need to draw a line somewhere. Anyway, I struggle with this and I expect my enforcement of the policy will be more forgiving than it sounds, but some of us just want our ball game back.

There's a new sheriff in town y'all !!

Right! Not just the players injecting it--the announcers (play by play and analysts), the performers of music, the sponsors and commercials, the banners in the stands, the issues of the actual team names, the backs of the jerseys etc etc etc

Hornfans posters are not "injecting" politics into sports; sports is now a 24/7 political branch of the left--how can we possibly ignore it? But okay, we'll do our very best.

I do hope that we can have sports boards that discuss players, plays, coaches, coaching, games, scores, rankings, etc., without all this, so I hope this rule allows that to happen.

I have extended family members who cannot have a conversation on any topic whatsoever without turning it into a political rant. I love them but I avoid their company as much as possible because they are insufferable bores

Thank you Dion. We all appreciate the difficult position that you have been put in. Additionally, I think I speak for all when I say how much we appreciate all of the work that you put into Hornfans.

You are absolutely right, and frankly what's happening in sports right now is part of a broader cultural phenomenon. Politics is becoming a major factor in everything - sports, business, movies, television, etc. And again, I fully recognize that all of these things have always had political facets. The big difference now is that politics is playing so large of a role that it's starting to disrupt the underlying activity. Team names and songs are being changed for political reasons. Uniforms are being altered and defaced to carry a preferred political message. The announcers and commentators are putting political causes at the forefront. It's becoming impossible to get away from it. Hell, games are being delayed and cancelled for political reasons. It's absurd.

Any you're right. It is a loss of innocence, because even though I enjoy politics, nothing is less innocent. It is the height of sleaze and cynicism. Coke dealers, hookers, porn stars, and car thieves are much more innocent than politicians are.

Dion,
Thank you for all your hard work on this forum. I know it has to be time consuming and you stated you have a lot of time consumers in your life. That makes me even more appreciative of this forum and what you do.
Thank you for taking the stand that you stated so well. It is needed and valued. As you said, it is difficult to turn anywhere that politics are not permeating everything. It is great to know that I can click on "On the Field" or "Recruiting" and find a politic free zone!
