i like spicy food. mouth-searing, colon-blowing, hot and spicy food. would appreciate folks' thoughts on the spiciest menu items in austin, so i can continue with this masochistic fetish. looking for straight off the menu items. not special orders. asian, mexican, indian, anything.

top of my list so far is the "P16" Pud Cha Catfish at Madam Mam's and my weekly visit to Noodleism for the Fleet enema known as Nitro Noodle. and how i miss the original jamaican jerk chicken (off the bone) at Calabash -- RIP.

please add to my list of Capsicum Classics.

I would agree that P16 at the Madam Mam's is the hottest thing on the planet. I have to run directly to Amy's afterwards to try to cool my mouth down.

my vote is the XXXXX at TX Chili Parlor. i have to drink tea in between bites and i wasn't even getting the XXXX (or wahtever it is). i had the hot.

I ate at Satay's about 15 years ago...that was by far the hottest I have ever eaten. Now that I'm older, I have a higher tolerance for spicy food, so I should go back.

"turbo squid" at sea dragon.

just about anything on the dinner menu at thai kicthen on guadalupe with 3-4 peppers next to its description is going to be damn hot. especially if you tell them you like it really hot when you order.

i retract my comment above re the XXX at texas chili parlor. i had it for lunch today for the first time in a while, and it wasn't very spicy. the XXX habanero was flavorful, but not very spicy either. i didn't see XXXXX on the menu. is that a special order at TCP?

as for Thai Kitchen, i'll have to try the turbo squid, though i can't say i'm much of a squid fan.

the turbo squid is at sea the dragon (the one on research between ohlen road and burnet road).

thai kitchen on guadalupe has lots of really really hot dishes --fish, pork, chicken, beef, etc.

I don't think that the World Beat Cafe is still around, but they had this one dish that was so hot I think I drank about 10 glasses of water over the course of the meal. The big fat Ethopian cook guy was laughing at me the whole time.

That catfish can't be the hottest thing in austin, it shouldnt even be close to the top. I can't really think of much off the top of my head that beats it, although I have had much hotter salsas of the homemade variety, but I did go to a mexican restaruant once that had habanero enchiladas, I remember those being pretty damn hot.

as far as sauces, i'd put Winston's sauce near the top of the list. Calabash used to sell it. a couple restaurants still have it. also Art'z Sauce at Art'z rib house is potent. of course, the hottest "sauce" you'll find anywhere is The Source at Tears of Joy. that stuff is a WMD.

as for straight-off-the-menu dishes, i can't think of anything i've had that's spicier than the P16 catfish at madam mam's. i'm sure there are spicier dishes in town, i just haven't found them. if you know of the place that serves habanero enchiladas, i'd love to try that. perhaps it could rival my habanero sirloin chili or my apple-habanero salsa.

I think they got rid of XXXXX because it tasted terrible. It had no flavor at all, just heat. It was most likely the worst chili I'd ever paid for.

Is it true that the Texas Chili Parlor quit carrying Lone Star? If so, that place is dead to me. I haven't been in two years. The chili just didn't seem that good anymore.

i had a hankering for a frito pie a couple weeks ago and hit the chili parlor. hadn't been in 2 or 3 years. i was completely disappointed and left half of it on the table. kind of sad. the chili and frito pie at billy's on burnet blows it away.

sounds very good.

and there is reason to believe that capsaicin is mildly addictive. it triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers. same thing that causes the so-called runner's high and turns a painful experience into a pleasurable one. at the least, it is a mood elevator.

If you order any of the vegetable dishes at Clay Pit and request it to be "desi hot", you better have a tall glass of lassi on standby. That stuff made my dad cry and he eats jalapenoes like candy.

I ordered the paneer mirch masala as hot as possible at Clay Pit over the weekend and it was probably as hot as anything I've been served in a restaurant.

the xxx at tx chili parlor isn't very hot at all. go to plucker's and order the fire in the hole wings. it was so rough i couldn't even put my face directly over the wings. i ate like 2 and a half.
