Spanish Roof Tile - how expensive is it?

I will be needing a new roof soon on our two-story house we bought and was wondering how much more expensive it would be to have Spanish tile installed instead of composite shingles. If, say a new composite roof estimate was $5,000, about how much could I expect to pay for tile? Also, how well does Spanish tile wear and how long do they last? How well do they hold up against hailstones? How the hell do you get onto your roof after you have installed them? They seem like they would be quite slick and difficult to get footing with. Thanks in advance!

They last almost forever. They are VERY expensive and weigh a ton. If your roof has composition shingles it probably does not have the framing to support tile because it didn't need to and people rarely pay for framing they don't need. They are not slick at all, but they are fairly fragile when a fatass walks on them. They withstand hail well unless it is baseball sized. I doubt anything withstands that.

All of the above is based upon an understanding that you are talking about the spanish tile that is basically a clay tube cut in half with a pattern of hills overlapping valleys. The hills sit on top of a 2x on edge and the valleys are secured to the decking. It really is a lot of weight to think about adding to a typical roof.

For whatever reason I did not even take into consideration the weight issue. And you are correct, I would do the clay 1/2 cylinders.

they sell lightweight tile now. it can be used on former comp roofs without any additional support.

Probably about three times the cost of regular comp.
