Spam at a 'clean' address

In the last 2 weeks, I have started receiving spam ("your password is updated" and similar) at my permanent forwarding email address thru Texas Exes. I make it a point not to use this address when filling out forms, or signing up for anything on the internet.

1) Has anyone else experienced this with their Texas Ex email address?
2) How did my "clean" email address become tainted? And how can I avoid this situation in the future?

Thanks for any feedback.

my alumni.utexas address is a magnet for spam. Either there is some way to get a list of all the valid addresses, or the spammers are very good a guessing registered names.

just Texas making some money is all. They say they don't sell e-mail lists, but I find that pretty hard to believe - especially when you get junk from apartment leasing places
