I usually stay away from Western Europe, but the gf is going and doesn't like the idea of 3rd world travel.

Anyway, I thought I'd compromise. We'll do a day of Barcelona, of course, a day of Madrid, but I'm not into the whole just partying/clubbing and getting trashed thing and laying at the beach and generally just being a degenerate (nothing wrong with that if that's what you like, but when I travel I like to see a bunch of ****, the more off the beaten path the better)

Andalucia looks more like what I usually see, but I'm not sure how to go about setting up an itinerary. Lonely planet is filled with stuff, but I've never heard of any of it before, so I don't know how to prioritize. Galicia looks interesting too, but that's on the other side of the country.

Any input would be appreciated.

My family is from Galicia. Most of the province is underdeveloped and very natural. Lots of mountains and the smell of eucalyptus everywhere. In my opinion, it is the safest place I've visited in Europe. The language they speak is Gallego which is a solid blend of Portuguese, Spanish, and maybe even some Celtic influence (they also happen to love the bagpipe). I've flown and taken a train into Santiago. Santiago de Compostela is recognized as one of the most 'cultural' cities in Europe. Take that for what it is worth. The coast line is beautiful, but the water is freezing. Portugal is a hop and a skip away. If you aren't looking for skyscrapers and urban density, this is a neat place to visit.

are you really only spending one day in madrid? you need at least a full day to visit el prado.

I'll give you some awesome madrid suggestions since I just went there in december.

Stuck at Work

Started writing my response, then something interrupted, so I just saw yours. YES. That's the stuff I'm looking for. Sweet. Thanks for the responses.

And yeah I'll probably just skip Barcelona and do two or three days in Madrid.

Yes, Barcelona is a good place to go. Not disagreeing.

Madrid is more centrally located and I'd rather see Andalucia and/or Galicia in my 10 days there. I don't like spending much time in large Western European cities. So for me, it's not worth going.

Thanks for the tips though.
