Southside pizza

on S. Congress, close to Oltorf. Was meeting a buddy for lunch today at Homeslice, only to discover that they are closed on Tuesdays.

So, we went down the street to Southside. Got a sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, and red onion pie. It was fantastic. Slightly better than homeslice, in my opinion. Sauce had a good herb essence and tangy bite to it, fresh cheese, and toppings were great without being greasy. Lots of fennel in and around the sausage. Crust was very good, although in the very center, it was slightly soggy, but I think that was a product of the number of ingredients, and then seepage from where all the slices come together.

It wasn't cheap, but it wasn't any more than Homeslice. I will definitely go back, and probably will choose it over Homeslice (also, it wasn't as crowded as Homeslice gets).

But if someone insists on meeting at Homeslice, I won't mind.

thanks for that p/c

How far is this place from Homeslice?

I had my first deep dish from Conan's on Stassney Sunday in a long long time. It was pretty good.

West side.

Technically at the corner of S Congress and College Ave. Across the street from and a bit south of The Treehouse.

Went there last week on Thursday. Good stuff. Comparable to HomeSlice but not as nice inside. Both have great pizzas at similar prices.

i tried this place today for the first time. i don't think southside and homeslice are comparable, they are two totally different kinds of places, i think, as to both the environment and the food. i'll not knock anyone's opinion who likes it, to each his own, but some thoughts for those trying to decide between s/s and h/s pizza

a friend and i ordered a small pepperoni and an italian hoagie to split each of them.

"can we get hot peppers on that hoagie?"
"bell peppers?
"no, hot peppers"
"it comes with a pepperocini on the side"
"no, diced hot cherry peppers on the sandwich"
"these? (holds up the dried peppers you shake on pizza)
"nevermind"

big plusses: they have fountain rc and ibc. the pizza crust was cooked to perfection -- nice and crispy, whereas at homeslice i have to ask them to cook it extra long to get it right. liked the sauce too. good hoagie bread, more like a french baguette than an italian roll, but i liked it that way. good meat and veggies. its also much cheaper than homeslice. 4 smaller sized slices of za' for $5. thats great.

big minuses: no draft beer. no slices, pies only. but you can get a "personal" for $4. the crust on the pizza was way too salty, almost overpowering (again, the opposite of homeslice, which doesn't use enough salt in their dough). the sandwich was dry -- no mustard, mayo, vinagrette, completely dry. i saw them they serve several salads. they all got served in those to go plastic containers. and the food comes on cheap paper plates. can't they get some plastic plates and bowls?

a good alternative if you're looking for a cheap, good pizza, especialy for delivery. but for an overall experience, h/s pwns it.

Gak, hate to nitpick but your narrative makes it hard to figure out who is saying what...

Othwise, good review (I haven't been to either spot).

i live halfway between homeslice and southside and have picked up pizzas from both dozens of times. i've come to prefer southside, though homeslice is definitely the better scene if you're eating at the restaurant. my problem with homeslice is that they are very inconsistent in how they make the pies. i order basically the same pie everytime, and it looks and tastes different every time. sometimes, it flat out sucks. southside is more consistent, especially in the crust dept. also, southside uses a minced roasted garlic that i highly recommend (try a pepperoni and garlic pie), whereas homeslice uses cloves. homeslice also suffers from the Law of Diminishing Pizza Ingredients, whereby the total volume of ingredients on a pizza is going to be the same whether you order one ingredient or ten. if you order ten, you will get 1/10 of the amount of each ingredient that would be used if you ordered a pie with only that ingredient. you're wasting money at homeslice if you order more than 2 ingredients.

on a related note, i have been ordering from East Side Pies for lunch delivery to my downtown office and have been very pleased with it. in particular, i have a habanero addiction, and they feature an excellent diced habanero ingredient on their pies on request. and they crosscut their pies, which i like (the way Louie's does it in Dallas).
