Southern University 11/08 @ 7:00pm

Looks like the same issues as last year. Not being able to make perimeter jump shots against a zone and can't make free throws.

Post game press conference... I agree with Vic's comments for the most part. These games are for concentrating on specific areas that will set you apart in the long run. Shooting was bad from downtown and the line.

Thoughts about the game:
  • When I saw that they had more blocks against us than we had on them, I thought, "How do those short girls get blocks on our tall ones?" Realized it was them slapping the ball as our bigs were trying to bring the ball up towards the bucket. Which means this is a strength issue that these normal sized players were overpowering our bigs
  • Free throw shooting. I wonder if they ever practice realistic free throws. Often you get banged in the middle of a shot or as you are running with the ball. You're huffing and puffing when you step up to the free throw line. But in practice, they're just standing there shooting 100+ free throws. Why not in practice have them sprint from one free throw line to the other and take 5 shots. Have their hearts beating and their hands shaking and their minds a little unfocused?
  • Love how this team is always looking for the rebound and the steal. Still miss the way that Celeste or Ariel would try to "poke" the ball out of the possession of the player. But the frantic attempts to gain (most) rebounds was great.
  • I was worried for a bit with the under the basket ball handling of Jones. She was just losing the ball to these smaller bodies flailing their hands around hers. Only later did she seem more in control.
  • And then I noticed they were distinctly aiming the ball for her under the basket. Even with a 35+ lead and then I realized, "ahh, gotta get reps in for UConn"
  • When Giselle was knocking down those 3's I was thinking "Kyndal Hunter!"
  • I didn't know Amina could be this good!
  • Why not let Tionna and Jordana in sooner?

Southern seemed to be collapsing on Taylor specifically, to my eyes. I distinctly remember uconn collapsing on her with three players, at least once in the game last season. Taylor and these three players were isolated in the camera lens when it happened and I remember thinking, “Whoa!” Hopefully being smothered like that last night will help her down the road in the bigger games.

I forgot to mention something. During one slight break as they refs were signaling which Southern player fouled our player and they were gathering the players for a free throw, Vic was whistling loudly with his mouth (wish I could do that), trying to get the attention of his players before they lined up. I think he was trying to get Taylor's attention.

Uh oh, I thought, he's going to chew her out. Instead he was hitting the top of his fist (closed around his game plan) and shouting at her, "Good job! That was a good job!"

And several times as his players were coming down the court, he was yelling at them, "Good defense!" "You did a good job!"

I know last year he was trying to change himself and provide praise and not just criticism during games.

Texas is still good at making games sloppy and its a good thing. Holle should really get consideration for defensive player of the year if she plays enough. She is as good as Rori on ball and can block shots.

Would just like to give a shout out to Alex Loeb and Andrea Lloyd. They make a great team and I really enjoy their broadcasts. Watching games at some of the other venues around the league make it all the more obvious to me.
